THE ELEMENTS AND THEIR MAGICKAL SYMBOLISM

The magickal symbol of Earth. Earth is a feminine element corresponding to the direction North. The element of Earth stands for stability, growth, and prosperity. The Elemental forces that rule Earth are Gnomes. The weapon or magickal tool is the pentacle . The colors are green and brown and the season is Winter. The time of day is midnight, and the name of the elemental king is Boreas (the northern wind). Boreas can be visualized as an old man with dark grey hair streaked with black. He wears brown or black robes. He bears a pentacle, shield or sometimes a black mirror. The deity that corresponds with earth is of course the Earth Mother. Earth rules all prosperity magick, stone magick and fertility magick.

The magickal symbol of Air. Air is a masculine element corresponding to the direction East. The element of Air stands for intellect, dreams and new beginnings. The elemental forces that rule Air are Sylphs. The weapon or magickal tool is the wand. The color is yellow and the season is Spring. The time of day is dawn, and the name of the elemental king is Eurius. Eurius can be visualized as a pale youth with light colored hair, dressed in yellow garments and holding a wand. The deity that corresponds with air is Lugh, the celtic god of the sun. Air rules all academic magick, wind magick and any type of spell concerning dreams.

The magickal symbol of Fire. Fire is a masculine element corresponding to the direction South. The element of fire stands for will and for change. The elemental forces that rule Fire are Salamanders. The weapon or magickal tool is the athame (pronounced a-tha-may). The colors are orange and red and the season is Summer. The time is noon, and the name of the elemental king is Notus. Notus can be visualized as a man in his twenties or thirties dressed in red or orange garments and armour bearing a sword. His hair is the gold of the summer sun. The deity that corresponds with fire is Thor, the norse god of the smith. Lugh also may be used as a fire god. Fire rules all candle magick, protection spells and any spell with a purpose of great change. WARNING... often a fire spell brings about very quick and drastic change that the person may not have intended. Be wary when incorporating fire magick into your circle, and alway be aware of the physical considerations of fire magick and keep plenty of water on hand.

The elemental forces that rule Water are Undines. The weapon or magickal tool is the chalice . The colors are blue and sea green and the season is Autumn. The time is dusk and the name of the elemental king is Zephyrus. Zephyrus can be visualized as a middle aged man in sea green garments bearing a cup. His hair is russet red, the color of autumn. The deity that correspond with water is Yemaya. Also Aphrodite, who was born of the sea foam, is often associated with the sea. Water rules all love magick, healing spells and initiations. It is important to note that the West is considered the land of the dead which is known by many names...Wiccans call it the Summerland...the Celts know it as Tir na nog...the Egyptians as Amenti. But whatever the name, the West is where we look to when we honor those who have gone through the veil, and is the place where the Cauldron of Rebirth and Knowledge sits. The Goddess who holds the Cauldron in Her hand is Cerridwen, the Celtic Crone Goddess.
