Chapter Seventeen

One more day

Kevin looked up at the clock on the wall as the words rang through his head.

One more day.

He sat his coffee cup back on the table and gave up trying to make his hands stop shaking.

They were leaving the very next day to begin their long promotional tour and then the world tour. Aside from a few breaks here and there, it wouldn't be over for an entire year.

Sighing, he stood up from his table and crossed the kitchen to the sink where he poured his coffee down the drain. Steaming hot liquids were not productive when one's hands were shaking.

He looked up at the clock again. It was 7:45. Maybe Drew would be up by now.

Most of his night had been spent in much the same way. After waking up from a fitful sleep several times, he gave up trying to sleep and went up the the kitchen and made himself a pot of coffee. He spent the rest of the night at the kitchen table with his coffee. Thinking. And waiting.

When the clock struck eight o'clock, he picked up teh phone and dialed Drew's number. He expected the phone to ring a few times and Drew answer it groggily but she answered it on the first ring.

"Hello?" she said.

"Morning, beautiful."

"Hey sweetie." she responded and Kevin smiled at her voice.

"Did you have a good night's sleep?" he asked.

"Probably about as good as you did." she said and Kevin nodded to himslef. The both knew that the other didn't sleep well last night.

"Have you got any plans tonight?" he asked her.

"Of course not. What do you have in mind?"

"Well, there's this party tonight. Our record company is throwing it and it's one of those elegant dinner party things. I have to be there, so I was wondering if you wanted to go too."

"Kevin, I'd love to go, but I don't have anything to wear to a formal dinner party." she said, sounding a little dissapointed.

"Don't worry about it, I've got that under control. I'll be there around seven, ok?"

She agreed and they said good bye to one another and hung up.

Kevin got dressed and quickly left his house, grabbing the white box on the table as he left.

******************************

Kevin stood outside of Drew's door with two boxes i nhis hands and rang thedoorbell. He was wearing a black suit with a midnight blue collared shirt on underneath. Drew opened the door and smied beautifully at him.

"You look great." she told him as he entered her house. She was wearing a pair of jeans and a black turtle neck with the sleeves pushed up to her elbows.

"You don't look too bad yourself, angel." He said as he leaned forward and gave her a kiss. "Ready to go?" he asked playfully as she rolled her eyes at him.

"What's in the boxes?" she asked.

Kevin sat the two boxes on her coffee table and turned back to her. "They're for you." he said. "Open them."

Drew walked forward and opened the tall box on the top. She took the lid off and pushed aside the white tissue paper that was inside to reveal a pair of new white strappy sandals. They were high heeled, the straps looked as if they would come to righ above her ankles and fit her perfectly.

"These are beautiful, Kevin, thank you, but-"

"Open the other one." he said, interrupting her.

She carefully replaced the shoes in the box and set them aside. She opened the bigger, yet flatter box and gasped as she pushed the tissue paper aside. She reached in and pulled out the beautiful white gown she'd seen in th ewindow the day she went shopping with Kevin.

"Kevin..." she said, nearly breathless. "How did you get this? I went back a few days later and they were out."

"I bought it the day we were there and had them deliver it to my house. Do you like it?"

"Of course. I love it. Thank you so much!" There were tears of appreciation in her eyes as she hugged him fiercely, careful not to wrinkle the dress.

Kevin hugged her to him for a moment, then gently pushed her away. "Now go put it on, we're going to be late." Drew happily turned away and picked up the box containing the shoes and hurried back to her bedroom.

Kevin waited dinthe livingroom while sh echanged. He walked around the room for a few minutes and as he sat down onthe coudh,he heard he rleave her bedroom to go to the bathroom to fix her hair and make up. Finally, after a good twenty minutes, she was finished. Kevin's breath caught in his throat at the sight of her.

The pure white of the dress set off her dark skin perfectly and the fabric clung to her every curve. She opted to leave her beautiful black hair down instead of pinning it up and her makeup was done perfectly. All in all, she looked absolutely breathtaking.

"Wow." he breathed as he came closer to her. He took her hand and raised it above their heads and twirled her around to look at her while she laughed at him. "Wow." he said again.

As she finished turning around and faced him again, she sucked in a sharp breath as she saw the hot look in his eyes.

He smiled slowly and sensually at her and said "There's one more thing."

Drew stood where she was as he went to stand behind her. She waited and a moment later she felt something cold against her neck. She turned toward the mirror over the couch and gasped as she saw the most beautiful diamond necklace she'd ever seen.

Kevin stood behind her and watched her face in the mirror to judge her reaction. She looked absolutly stunned as she looked at the necklace in the mirror before she turned to face him.

"Kevin, I can't accept this-" she whispered.

He raised his hand and placed his index finger against her lips to silence her.

"Please." he whispered, his face close to hers. "You have to accept it. I want-" He paused, his emotions overcoming him. He took a deep breath and tried again. "I want you to remember me when I'm gone."

Drew covered his hand where it was still on her lips and lowered it. "Kevin." she said softly. "I will remember you until the day I die. You don't have to worry about that."

Kevin looked into her eyes and knew that she'd accepted his gift. The smiled at one another and he took her hand and wordlessly led her to the waiting limo.
