Chapter Nine

As the morning came, Kevin tried his best to fight off waking up. He wanted to stay asleep as long as possible but his nose was itching but he didn't want to put enough energy into scratching it. The feeling got worse and worse until he couldn't stand it anymore and he quickly raised his hand to scratch his nose.

The itching went away, only to come back moments later. Kevin finally, reluctantly, opened his eyes to see Drew leaning over him, smiling beautifully at him. She was holding a lock of her hair in her fingers and brushing it softly across his nose. Kevin smiled warmly at her and brought his hand up to caress the side of her face. They shared a moment of comfortable silence before Kevin broke eye contact by sitting up.

When he did, he noticed that Drew was already dressed and her hair was slightly damp from her obviously recent shower. "Going somewhere?" he inquired softly.

Drew smiled at him as she stood up and ran her fingers through her hair. "Home." she said simply.

Kevin frowned and approached her, stopping directly in front of her. "Please don't." he said softly. Almost too softly, for Drew had to lean in to hear him. "Don't leave me yet."

"Kevin-" she began but was cut off by Kevin gently putting his index finger to her lips.

"Just spend today with me. I...I don't want to be alone yet." he pleaded with her.

Drew might have been able to resist if she hadn't looked into his beautiful silver-green eyes. In those eyes she saw the anguish he was feeling yet trying to hide. She saw just how hurt he was about all that had happened the night before.

"Ok." she heard herself agreeing softly. Kevin's eyes lit up slightly and Drew felt her heart warm at his obvious happiness. He smiled genuinly at her as he left the room to take his own shower.

Dangerous territory, Drew Bailey. She told herself. You'd better watch out or you'll find yourself falling for that handsome rogue. Drew shook her head to herself as if it were a silly thought and went back to combing her hair.

To Kevin, it was the best day he'd spent in years. Just being in Drew's company for the entire day comforted him. Although the situation with Genna was always in the back of his mind, Drew had a way of distracting him.

Before they'd left his house, Kevin check his answering machine which was blinking.

Hey Kev. It's Brian. Just checking up on you. You left the club kinda early last night and we were worried. We would have stopped by last night but Nick threw up on the bartender and almost got his ass kicked. I had to carry his sick ass home. Give me a call later to let me know you're ok. See ya later. Bye

Kevin called Brian back and had a short conversation with him before hanging up. The two of them left and headed to Drew's house so she could get a change of clothing before they left to spend the day together.

The first thing they did was go to the mall for some shopping. Kevin found it a very enjoyable experience, shopping with Drew. They went into all the stores and she convinced him to try on several outfits, many of which he ended up buying.

As they walked through the mall, Kevin loaded down with several bags, Drew stopped and stared into a store window. "Look at that dress, Kevin." she said, admiration in her voice.

Kevin looked to where she was pointing and saw a beautiful white gown hanging on a manequin. The gown was elegant and silky looking. It was sleeveless with spaghetti straps and fit snugly to the manequin all the way down to the flowing hem line. "It's beautiful." Kevin said and turned to look back at her. "You should get it. It would look beautiful on you."

Drew shook her head. "I could never afford that." she said regretfully and turned away from the dress.

"Oh well." Kevin said and started walking again.

Drew reluctantly followed after one more wishfull glance at the dress.

"I have to go to the bathroom." Kevin said to her. "Can you take these bags to my car for me?" Drew agreed and took the many bags from him and headed to the parking lot. She searched around until she found Kevin's black 4Runner. She fished the keys out of her pocket and unlocked the door, putting the packages inside.

She went back into the mall and found Kevin at the food court, looking very smug with himself. Drew eyed him suspiciously and said "Did you find something you didn't know you had in the bathroom?"

Kevin laughed and put an arm around her shoulders and pulled her to him, kissing her soundly on the cheek. "Come on." he said. "Let's go somewhere and get lunch." The left the mall and found a small Italian Restaurant to eat at.

As the ate their meal, they chatted companionably. Drew asked Kevin to tell her about himself and he realted to her several funny stories of he and his two brothers growing up.

"I was terrified of Kiss for years." he said, concluding a story and Drew laughed.

Kevin grew serious for a moment and appeared to think something over. He looked down into his plate and said softly. "I've always wanted children."

Drew looked at him and saw the pain clearly written on his face and covered his hand with hers.

Kevin grasped her hand and looked up into her eyes. "I just can't understand why she did this to me, Drew. I thought she loved me."

Drew's heart ached at the pain so evident in his voice. When he looked back up at her she saw the tears in his eyes. Kevin looked around for a moment and then back at her. "Let's get out of here." he said softly and they paid their bill and left.

They headed back to Kevin's house and after they pulled into the driveway and got out, Kevin took her hand and led her around to the back of the house. "Come on, I want to show you something." He led her to a distant, remote part of his property. There was a beautiful lake that bordered his property with a beautiful curved wooden bridge that crossed part of it. They stopped in the center of the bridge looked out over the water which held a reflection of the now setting sun.

Kevin pulled Drew to him, her back to his front and wrapped his arms around her, leaning up against the rail of the bridge.

"This is beautiful, Kevin." Drew whispered.

They stood in silence for a few moments, looking out over the water, before Kevin broke the silence. "You're so different, Drew." he whispered.

"What do you mean?"

"When I first met you." Kevin explained. "You would be so hot and passionate one moment but in the very next instant you'd be so cold that I wouldn't think that a single emotion ran through you. And now this."

Drew could feel his warm breath against her neck and ear and asked weakly "This?"

"Mm-hmm." Kevin answered affirmatively, as he leaned down to nibble on her ear. "This is a different you." he whispered. "You're so tender and understanding, exactly what I need. You're sensitive and even a little loving. You're being exactly what I've wished for."

Drew turned in his arms and slipped her arms around his neck. His head lowered slowly and Drew stopped breathing in anticipation of the kiss and she wasn't dissapointed. His lips covered hers and took her breath away. This kiss was unlike any they'd shared before. Where the others were full of passion and desire, this kiss was full of tenderness and promise. After a moment, Kevin broke away from the kiss and laid his forehead on hers, both of them breathless.

Kevin's heart beated quickly as he looked at the beautiful woman in his arms. "Come back to the house with me." he whispered.

Drew came out of the fog just enough to grasp what he said and she shook her head. "I can't." she whispered. "I have to be at work."

Kevin sighed in obvious dissapointment and nodded reluctantly. After one more tender touch of their lips, Drew slid out of his embrace and left.
