Pokémon Red/Blue: Boss Strategies
Pewter City boss: Brock
He has Rock Pokémon (Geodude, Onix)

Strategy: This is one of the harder bosses, because you don't have a real big choice of Pokemon to use, but if you use these strategies, this should be a snap. Rock types are weak against Water and Grass types, so use Bulbasaur or Squirtle. Squirtle can take them out in a single hit with his Bubble attack. If you're using Bulbasaur, wait until level 13 when he learns Vine Whip. The Leech Seed won't help you much on this battle. If you have Charmander it's tougher, but if you leveled up to 12-14 you'll be OK. As tempting as it is, don't even think of using Pikachu!!

Cerulean City boss: Misty
She has Water Pokémon (Staryu, Starmie)

Strategy: Water types are weak against Grass and Electric types. Bulbasaur, Pikachu (you did remember to get a Pikachu back in the Viridian Forest, didn't you? DIDN'T YOU?!), Bellsprout and Oddish are good picks. This boss is very easy (I beat her using only a level 16 Bellsprout), so don't get discouraged!!!

Vermilion City boss: Lt. Surge
He has Electric Pokémon (Pikachu, Voltorb, Raichu)

Strategy: Get Diglett or Sandshrew first, then use their Dig attack against the Pokémon. It usually kills them in one shot.

Celadon City boss: Erika
She has Grass Pokémon (Victreebel, Tangela, Vileplume)

Strategy: Most people think you need to take a Fire type but since good Fire types are hard to find, I recommend you take a Flying type instead. Fearow and Dodrio are great choices. Use the Fly attack for BIG DAMAGE!!! Be sure to take a few Paralyze Heals and Awakenings along, just in case you get hit by Sleep Power or Stun Spore, or something.

Saffron City boss: Sabrina
She has Psychic Pokémon (Kadabra, Mr. Mime, Venomoth, Alakazam)

Strategy: Psychics have very few weaknesses, and are strong against Fighting and Poison types. Oh yeah, I sorta forgot to mention...this is one of, if not THE, hardest bosses in the game, so get ready, sucker!! Just use any strong Pokemon and any attacks except Psychic and Fighting. Ghost and Bug attacks work well (Parasect is one of the best Pokémon for fighting Psychic types, so be sure to bring one along) but I wouldn't recommend taking a Ghost type along as Psychic attacks are strong against Ghost types. Take plenty of Hyper Potions!!!!!!!!!! (lots of exclaimation points)

Fuchsia City boss: Koga
He has Poison Pokémon (Koffing, Weezing, Muk)

Strategy: This boss isn't terribly tough, but it's a good idea to take some Antidotes along in case of poisoning. Poison types are weak against Ground and Psychic types; I always use Hypno for this one, but Sandslash, Dugtrio, and Marowak are good picks, too. Don't get too discouraged - the other trainers in the gym are actually stronger than the leader himself!

Cinnabar Island boss: Blaine
He has Fire Pokémon (Growlithe, Ponyta, Arcanine, Rapidash)

Strategy: Now who's idea was it to put this guy in the game? He sucks! Too easy. Just whip out the Articuno you should have captured in the last dungeon and let 'er rip. It almost always kills them in one shot, and if it doesn't, it sometimes freezes them so they can't attack. The first time I fought this guy I beat him without losing any HPs at all! So don't worry about your Pokémon's health before going into battle. If you didn't get Articuno, Blastiose, Gyarados or Starmie can beat him just as easily. One Surf or Hydro Pump or heck even Water Gun should take 'em out. All in all, the easiest boss in the game.

Viridian City boss: Giovanni (the boss of Team Rocket)
He has Ground Pokémon (Rhyhorn, Dugtrio, Nidoking, Nidoqueen, Rhydon)

Strategy: Water types are your best bet. I always use Gyarados, but Blastoise and Starmie are good picks, too. You can use Grass types but don't use them against Nidoking and Nidoqueen. They're poison type, and are resistant to Grass. If you want to use Grass types I recommend Venusaur or Victreebel.

First of Elite Four: Lorelei
She has Ice Pokémon (Dewgong, Cloyster, Jynx, Slowbro, Lapras)

Strategy: First off: DON'T USE FIRE TYPES!!! You can use Fire types against the Jynx, but not against the others! They're part water type, and are resistent to fire. Just be patient; this boss, and the rest of the Elite four, is VERY tough compared to the other gym trainers you've faced! Okay. Now to beat this one, you'll probably want to use Electric. Grass is OK, but watch out for Ice-type attacks, you'll just keep getting nailed by 'em. I did pretty good with Victreebel on this one, but then I got nailed by Lapras' Blizzard. So use an electric type, but not Zapdos, he's part flying type and weak towards Ice. Probably Jolteon or Raichu. But go ahead and use Victreebel on the Slowbro. His Razor Leaf attack can take Slowbro out VERY quickly!

Second of Elite Four: Bruno
He has Fighting Pokémon (Onix, Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan, Machamp)

Strategy: Psychic types are great for this one. I recommend Hypno all the way. Hypno can usually take 'em out in one hit with even a weak attack, like Confusion. The Onix is rock type, so you'll want to use a Grass or Water type on it. Victreebel's awesome Razor Leaf works great, and Gyarados or Starmie can use Surf.

Third of Elite Four: Agatha
She has Ghost Pokémon (Haunter, Gengar, Arbok, Golbat)

Strategy: All of these are Poison types as well as Ghost type, so use Psychic or Ground types here (Hypno's my favorite). Just don't let your Psychic types get beat up too much by Ghost type attacks. A good strategy is to use Normal types (which aren't affected by Ghost attacks), but not Normal attacks (which can't hurt ghosts).

Last of Elite Four: Lance
He has Dragon Pokémon (Dragonair, Aerodactyl, Gyarados, Dragonite)

Strategy: Dragon types are weak only to Ice types, so use Articuno for this one. Also, they're weak to other Dragon types so you might wanna bring Dragonair or Dragonite. Just don't let 'em get hit with Dragon Rage a lot. Aerodactyl is a rock type, so use Grass or Water on it. Victreebel or Gyarados are my faves. Use an electric type against the Gyarados. IT's water/flying type, so Electric attacks will do a TON of damage!!!

Final Boss: Gary

Of course, this guy's name depends on what you named him at the beginning. For all I know, his name could be Buttmonkey. Well anyway, here goes. The first half of Gary's team will always be Pidgeot, Alazakam (psychic), and Rhydon (rock). The second half of his team will depend on which Pokémon you got at the beginning of the game. If you got Squirtle, he'll have Gyarados, Arcanine, and Venusaur; if you got Bulbasaur, he'll have Exeggutor, Gyarados, and Charizard; if you got Chamander, he'll have Arcanine, Exeggutor, and Blastoise. He is harder than any of the gym trainers, so don't underestimate him!
