Chapter Thirteen

Kevin slammed through the door and headed straight for the bar without looking at anyone. "Scotch." he told the bartender simply and sat down on the barstool to await his drink.

"Kev? Hey man!" Kevin turned to see AJ approaching with a drink in his hand. Sighing, Kevin nodded his head slightly in acknowledgment as he sat down. "What's wrong Kev? You don't look to happy."

"I'm not." he replied simply, taking a drink of the scotch the bartender had just sat down in front of him.

AJ sat quietly as he waited for Kevin to explain but when he didn't he sighed and said "Why aren't you happy, Kevin?"

Kevin looked at AJ over the rim of his glass and muttered "You wouldn't believe me if I told you."

"Come on Kev, this is me you're talking to. You can't say anything that could shock me."

Kevin scoffed softly and sat his drink down and looked over at AJ. "You don't think so? Well, how about this: Not to long ago, I found out I am a father and I just got finished marrying my son's mother." Picking his drink up with a half smile, Kevin raised it in a mock salute before taking another drink.

AJ stood speechless for a few moments then gave a small, nervous laugh. "You're kidding, right?" he asked.

"Nope." Kevin said and finished the drink, signaling to the bartender to bring him another.

"You married a woman who had your baby. Oh my." Kevin laughed sarcastically at AJ uncharacteristic nervousness as he plopped down on the barstool beside Kevin and ordered another drink. "Who is she?" he asked.

Kevin sighed and took a huge swig of his drink before he began the part he'd been dreading. He swallowed again as he thought of a way to say what he had to say. He was unaware of the minutes passing by as he contemplated a way to tell him.

"Kevin?" AJ said. "Who is she?" he repeated.

Kevin sighed and decided there was no way around it. "Lily." he said into his glass before he took another drink.

"What?!" AJ yelled, surprised, and grabbed the glass from Kevin's hand before he could take another drink. "Did you just say what I think you said? Lily?" Kevin nodded but said nothing. "The little boy at her parent's house was your son? Does Brian know? How long have you known? You MARRIED her?"

"Yes, he's my son, no Brian doesn't know yet, I found out yesterday, and yes I married her." Kevin said as he finished the rest of his drink and ordered another.

Kevin could just see the wheels turning in AJ's head as he calculated when Jeremy could have been conceived. Finally his head popped up and he said "Kevin! That means you and her-- The night before she left-- She was the girl in your room that night!"

Kevin nodded but offered no other explanation. "Man Kevin." AJ whispered as he took a large gulp of the drink he'd forgotten moments ago. "You married her? did you have to do that? Did you not stop to think about it? Why didn't you use a little common sense?"

"Common sense?" Kevin repeated after ordering another drink. "AJ, I don't have any common sense where she is concerned. If I did I wouldn't have slept with her to begin with. But as it is I don't have rational thoughts where she is concerned. When I first found out about Jeremy the first thought that ran through my mind was that she would finally be mine. Now everything has gone wrong. This 'marriage' hasn't started out to well." he gulped down another long drink and finished the drink off. Signaling to the bartender he asked how much he owed before he left the money on the bar and rose from the barstool unsteadily.

"Um...Kevin maybe you should take a cab.....home." Kevin nodded and walked from the bar and hailed a taxi. He told the bartender where he was going and laid his head back against the seat. As they pulled into the driveway Kevin saw that the lights were still on.

"Piss." Kevin muttered to himself as he gave the cabdriver the money and stumbled up the driveway. He thought that by that time Lily would be asleep and he wouldn't have to face her but the lights on told him she was still awake, waiting for him.

He put his hand on the door knob, expecting it to be locked but was surprised to see it wasn't, just as it was that morning when he'd first arrived. He opened the door and found her sitting on the couch. "You need to start locking your door." he said and began to stumble back to find a place to sleep.

"Kevin." Lily called and he turned back around. "Where have you been?" she asked.

"None of your business." he said, plopping down in one of the chairs.

"You've been out drinking, haven't you?"

"None of your damn business. You're not going to start nagging already are you wife?" he sneered at her.

Lily got up off the couch and approached him slowly. "I don't give a damn what you're out doing or who the hell you're doing it with but if you come back into my house drunk, one more time, I'll bring your ass in front of DEFACS and make sure you NEVER see Jeremy again." And with that she stalked away, into her bedroom, leaving Kevin to sleep on the couch.
