This Map, originally by Erhard Ringer, appeared in a German Edition of the Norman Scrolls, and was scanned and colored by Theron whilst translated by Bandark. I have corrected and added certain items from Theron's map,in addition to adding the "hot spots" and including the available information about various places.

TorvaldsLand

A scattered group of settlements in the far north. Famous for its inhabitants, the Torvaldslanders, who are similar in most respects to Earth Vikings of the early medieval period. Known for its superb sailors and the rough mannerisms of its denizens.

Kassau

A seaport in the far north, southwest of Torvaldsland. Though sharing a similar "Earth-nordic" culture with that place, it is far more cultured and civilized. A major trade center of the frigid northern climes of Gor. Similar to early medieval Copenhagen on Earth, or other Danish settlements of the same period.

Laura

A rough frontier town located on the Laurius River, upriver from Lydius. It serves as a staging point for the transport of bulk goods such as lumber and furs. A favored trade town for the various outlaws and woodsmen of the northern forests. Slave auctions often takes place here to rid the slaver of goods not as precious than the trouble keeping a slave to sell at one of the larger cities

Thentis

Fortress city in Mountains of Thentis. Exports: wool, Black Wine beans. Famed for its great Tarn flocks Not currently at war with anyone, except perhaps the city of Treve. Similar to several Tyrolean mountain cities found in the southern alps

Fort Haskins

A smallish fortress town at edge of the "barrens," vast grasslands NE of mountains of Thentis, guards trade routes in that region. Known for its large contingent of kailla and Tarn cavalry, used to resist and suppress raids by the Red Savages which inhabit the barrens. Similar to various western frontier settlements during the Indian wars of North America on Earth.

Ti

Walled river city situated on the Olni River north of Harna at of the Salerian Confederation, an alliance of four cities dedicated to the restriction of imperialism and piracy on the Olni River. Known for its superb Warriors. Similar to any of the walled city-states of ancient Earth Greece.

Port Olni

A large freshwater port on the Olni River, which is a tributory of the mighty Vosk river. Walled and well defended, it guards the mouth of the Olni where it joins the Vosk. A member of the Salerian Confederation.

Vonda

Large port city on the Olni river; took part in a disastrous territorial war against Ar. Known for production and training of male Gladitorial fighting slaves, is large Gladitorial center. Free women typically well-received, and several training houses are owned by such free women. Similar to any of the walled city-states of ancient Earth Greece.

Lara

Walled northern city-state,allied with Ko-ro-ba, which occupies the strategic juncture of the Vosk and Olni rivers. A freshwater port, it is otherwise typical of the mighty walled settlements of central civilized Gor. Known for its skilled Warriors,excellent sailors, and superbly trained slaves. Similar to any of the walled city-states of ancient Earth Greece. Lara's citizens are noted for their toughness, and extreme independance even by Gorean standards. In Lara, the reward for declaring oneself Ubar is death. Home of Oryx, Mapmaker and Explorer of some note.

Also known as the 'Garden Isle', Farnacium is renowned for the lush and varied vegitation, flowers and avian life. One of the Free Islands, also known as exchange islands. Administered as Free Ports by the Merchants, the Free Islands include Teletus, Tabor, Scagnar, Farnacium, Hulneth and Asperiche.

The largest of the central "exchange islands," governed not by civil authorities but rather according to merchant law. One of the Free Islands, also known as exchange islands. Administered as Free Ports by the Merchants, the Free Islands include Teletus,

Cos

Alliance of several cities which all exist on the island of Cos. Known for its famous wines and its vast fleets of trading ships, as well as its imperialistic tendencies. At war with the city of Ar, and along with its ally the Ubarate of Tyros it is currently at war with the city of Port Kar Similar to Minoan culture

Tyros

Alliance of several cities on the island of Tyros. Known for great fleets of raiding ships. Along with its ally the Ubarate of Cos it is currently at war with the city of Port Kar. Similar in certain respects to the ancient Earth island of Crete.

Ko-ro-ba

This is where the series of Gor really starts..with Tarl Cabot waking up to see his father, whome he thought long dead..Also known as "The Towers of the Morning," once destroyed by the Priest Kings but has long since been rebuilt cultural center similar to Ar Ko-ro-ba is in a perpetual state of semi-war with the city of Treve.

Port_Kar

Port city on the shores of Tamber gulf, at the coastal edge of Thassa, precise location unknown, as it guards its privacy tenaciously. Surrounded on the landward side by the vast Vosk Delta Marshes, inaccessible except by ship or tarnback. Den of thieves and pirates: Squalid and decadent, and often virtually lawless Similar to the pirate cities of the Barbary coast. One of the few cities that didn't have an Ubar until the wars with Cos started. The merchants and pirates in Port Kar has a code of their own. Also the home of Samos the slave trader and secret agent of the Priestkings.

Port_Cos

Freshwater river port town on the Vosk, originally established as a river colony and tributory of the Ubarate of Cos. Recently it has split away from the Ubarate and follows its own political agenda, even allying with the enemies of Cos itself. It is considered an ally of Ar Station.

A freshwater port on the Olni River, which is a tributory of the mighty Vosk river. A thriving river town which was instrumental in the defeat of the Vosk Pirates several years ago. A member of the Vosk League, 19 river towns united against river piracy on the Vosk.

Tharna

governed by a female ruler, or "Tatrix." Entire female population consists almost completely of female slaves. With its sister-city of Argentum to the south, known for their silver. Tharnan Warriors : blue helmets. Tharnan males : two yellow cords to bind slaves Similar to Carthage.

Brundisium

Large walled city, saltwater port S of Vosk delta on shores of Thassa. Port facilities rival even those of Cos and Tyros. Through the treachery of her former Ubar, the city of Brundisium, though officially allied with Ar, served as the staging point for the great Cosian invasion of Ar. Brundisium and Ar are no longer allies. Similar to any of the walled seaports of ancient Earth Greece.

Corcyus

A city southwest of Ar, which until recently was ruled by a Tatrix, Sheila of Corcyrus. She was deposed for her tyranny, and, after a lengthy war, the fortunes of the city are again on the rise. Similar to any of the walled city-states of ancient Earth Greece.

Argentum

Sister city to Tharna, and a producer of much of the silver mined on Gor. One of the "Silver-Cities" of the Gorean north. Similar to any of the walled city-states of ancient Earth Greece.

Torcadino

Ar

largest and most populous city on Gor. Similar in many respects to the ancient Urthan city of Rome, with Ubar Marlenus running the city. Ar has various political factions, the green and steel factions being two of the largest. Tarn Racing is a favourite pasttime of Arans. At war with its ancient enemy, the island Ubarate of Cos. Famous for the Aran kalana - a dry crisp wine. Ar has a famous kaissa player named Scormus who is the champion of the city. City was conquored for a time by Pah Kur, infamous assasin, who learnt the hard way that it doesnt pay not to have honour on Gor

Treve

The Tarnsman of Treve are said not to ever purchase a slave: they steal or claim such an animal. Slaves can't escape from Treve. Hidden in Voltai Mountains, accessible only by Tarnback. little or no agriculture, and exists solely through raiding and warfare. Currently at war with practically everyone, notably the city of Ko-ro-ba. Similar to Sparta of ancient Earth.

Largest and most populous of the desert city-states. In far south, NE of Turia, at the edge of the vast Turia wasteland. Major trade center and focal point of hundreds of desert caravan routes. Also cultural center for the tribesmen of the Tahari. Similar in many respects to ancient Earth Baghdad.

A Note on Gorean Directions

“For purposes of convenience [Tarl Cabot speaking in Scroll #4, Nomads of Gor] I am recounting directions in English terms, thinking it would be considerably difficult for the reader to follow references to the Gorean compass. Briefly, for those it might interest, all directions on the planet are calculated from the Sardar Mountains, which for the purposes of calculating direction play a role analogous to our north pole.

“The two main directions, so to speak, in the Gorean way of thinking are Ta-Sardar-Var and Ta-Sardar-Ki-Var, or as one would normally say, Var and Ki-Var; 'Var' means a turning and 'Ki' signifies negation; thus, rather literally, one might speak of 'turning to the Sardar' and 'not turning to the Sardar', something like either facing north or not facing north; on the other hand, more helpfully, the Gorean compass is divided into eight, as opposed to our four, main quadrants, or better said, divisions, and each of these itself is of course subdivided. There is also a system of latitude and longitude figured on the basis of the Gorean day, calculated in Ahn, twenty of which constitute a Gorean day, and Ehn and Ihn, which are subdivisions of the Ahn, or Gorean hour. Ta-Sardar-Var is a direction which appears on all Gorean maps; Ta-Sardar-Ki-Var, of course, never appears on a map, since it would be any direction which is not Ta-Sardar-Var.

“Accordingly, the main divisions of the map are Ta-Sardar-Var, and the other seven; taking the Sardar as our 'north pole' the other directions, clockwise as Earth clocks move (Gorean clock hands move in the opposite direction) would be, first, Ta-Sardar-Var, then, in order, Ror, Rim, Tun, Vask (sometimes spoken of as Verus Var, or the true turning away), Cart, Klim, and Kail, and then again, of course, Ta-Sardar-Var.”
