Mary Mendenhall
The Mendenhall family was from Marridge Hill, located between Albourne and Ramsbury, in Wiltshire, England. The earliest records of their presence there may be found in the parish records of the area, as far back as the 1500s. The birth records of 3 of our emigrating 5 Mendenhalls, John, Benjamin and Moses, are listed in the Quaker House library. The births of Mary and Margery are not recorded.. The last name was also spelled Minall, only one of the various spellings found in English and colonial records.
Thomas Mendenhall (1630-1682) , the father of our Pennsylvania Mendenhalls, married Joan Stroud in the Aldbourne church on August 12, 1649....this was the closest church to Marridge Hill, and many of the Mendenhall records are found there. Thomas's death is recorded in the church at Ramsbury , where he seemed to have attended later in life. His name is also recorded on the church rolls of Ramsbury for his donations to the church alms house.
The above Thomas Mendenhall's father was another Thomas Mendenhall, and his birth in 1609 is recorded at the Record's Office near Salisbury Cathedral. No death records have yet been found, but local tax records of 1662 indicate that his wife was a widow.
The father of this Thomas was , I'm afraid to say, yet another Thomas(1580-1638),but this time the surname is spelled MINALL... he is actually the first in a line of 8 documented Thomases that ends in 1818, when the last Thomas of the family died without naming his heir "Thomas". The first Thomas and wife are well documented in local records, with the birthrecords of their 4 children still in existence, along with deaths and legal bonds and inventories. There may have even been an earlier Thomas, for one appears on the tax records for Marridge Hill earlier in the 1500s.
