Fred
Alfred Ross Newlin
Alfred Ross "Fred" Newlin, my grandfather, was born on Nov.24, 1877, in St Clairsville, Belmont County, Ohio, the only child of Robert L. Newlin and Sarah Jane Lake. Robert and Sarah Jane married in 1877, and divorced on October 21, 1881, after which time Sarah and her son lived with her father, Alfred Lake, until she remarried in 1882. She and her second husband, John Riley, had 4 sons, my grandfather's half brothers, Clarence M., John Howard, Harry Watters and Albert E. Riley.
"Fred" and Pearl Berry married on April 20, 1904, in St. Clairsville, where he was an employee of the Hardesty grocery, a family owned business, and Pearl worked for the local newspaper. The family later moved to Wheeling, WV, where all the children received their education and eventually married. Pearl died of cancer in 1941, spending her last months in the care of my parents, Howard and Alice Newlin, in Paden City, WV. Fred died in Glendale, WV., in 1943.
This wallpaper is of the football team, at St. Clairsville (Ohio) High School, and the photo was taken in 1897 after a game with Linsey (St. Clairsville won 40 to 0) Sports were not school sponsored in those days, so there were no school uniforms, and the boys simply wore their own clothes.
