Howard West Newlin 1912-1965
My father, Howard West "Hutch" Newlin, was born in St. Clairsville, Belmont County, Ohio. September 17, 1912, the child of Alfred Ross and Pearl Mae Berry Newlin. Their eldest son, Alfred, was struck by a car and killed when my grandmother was pregnant for my father, and she became so ill that the baby was not expected survive. When he was born hale and hardy, his parents were so overjoyed that they gave him the middle name West, for the doctor who had successfully delivered him. Later, the family, composed of my father, his parents and siblings, Martha, Sarah, and brother Charles, moved to Wheeling, WV, where they lived "on the Island", and "out the Pike". My father and mother, Alice Conrad, met and began dating when she was 15, and married 9-9-39. My father worked for Bell Telephone Co. and lived & worked in Paden City, McMechen and Moundsville before moving to Charleston,WV, where our family has remained since being transferred here in 1953. Howard died of a coronary in 1965.
The wall paper is of downtown Wheeling, a year after my father was born.
