Area Newspapers

The first weekly newspaper in the county was near the close of the 1700s,
and put out by Jones, Hoff and Derrick, 3 young printers...The paper was
called the WEST CHESTER GAZETTE.
   In 1808 a weekly paper was begun in Downingtown by Charles Mowry,
entitled the TEMPERANCE ZONE. The next year the paper's name was changed to
THE DOWNINGTOWN AMERICAN REPUBLICAN.
THE CHESTER COUNTY DEMOCRAT was in existence in 1833, published by George
Fisher.
The above 2 papers were consolidated, and published under the title THE
AMERICAN REPUBLICAN AND CHESTER COUNTY DEMOCRAT,  in JAN of 1883.
THE AMERICAN SPECTATOR,  was also published in Downingtown in 1835.
THE DELAWARE GAZETTE was around the same time, and by 1853 published by GEo.
