Westside HI-Y group organized
The HI-Y Leadership Center announced today that the Westside HI-Y has completed requirements for recognition as a HI-Y for the 2002-2003 school year. Local HI-Y Advisor Pamela Lugar explained that the local HI-Y is focusing on youth civic leadership development throughout the 2002-2003 school year.
Serving as officers this school year are Dollie Rollins, President/HI-Y week chairperson; Ty Lugar, Vice-President/honor chairperson; Matthew Stewart, Secretary/mission chairperson; Patrick Brooks, treasurer; Cassie Brown, Chaplain; Mary Walls, historian; Jessica Cook and Sarah Thompson, reporters; Jerry Meade, sargeant at arms and Lindsay Cochran, other chairperson.
HI-Y, or high school YMCS, is a teen civic leadership-service experience sponsored by the HI-Y Leadership Center of the Ohio-West Virginia YMCA. Teens build skills of civic leadership as they volunteer in school and community service initiatives and participate in state wide HI-Y youth government, model United Nations assemblies and the leadership programs offered at YMCA Camp Horseshoe. David King, HI-Y leadership center executive director, explains that HI-Y is teen initiated and led. This is a chance for today's teens to take actions they plan to improve their school and community. In the process of helping others, teens develop the attitudes and skills required for life-long responsible citizenship.
