The Westview Youth Tournament, sponsored by FORESIGHT OPTOMETRISTS, was held on Saturday 7th September at the Westview Squash Club.
The tournament was a resounding success providing a great deal of encouragement to up and coming young squash players. We had a draw of 136 entries from 20 different schools, including 8 development children sponsored by FORESIGHT, and identified by Angela Difford. We also had 3 entrants from the Grahamstown development program. This tournament looks set to become a regular event on the Westview calendar.
Games were played on the basis of a 5 minute warm up, followed by 10 minutes of continual play with continual scoring. The beauty of this tournament, which precluded EP players, was that the up and coming youngsters were given the opportunity to participate and show their potential without being beaten off the court by provincial players.
Each child received a presentation pack which included a FORESIGHT t-shirt, vouchers, squash grips sponsored by SPORTSWORLD, as well as other goodies. The winners and runners up in each age group section received medals.
The winners will also be invited to a Coaching workshop which is to be run by Karen Schepers, as part of their tournament prize.
Westview would like to thank FORESIGHT OPTOMETRISTS for investing in the future of squash in the Eastern Province as well as to all who participated and helped put this great event together.
Nicky Alberts of Grey Junior school submitted the most entries and she will be receiving a designer pair of sunglasses donated by Eye Ball Mall, suppliers to Foresight Optometrists.
