DELL OptiPlex GX1 and GX1P and G1 and NX1 Upgrade
---Midsize chassis
--Tower Chassis
-Low Profile
Chassis
Note:
For the G1 users its the same procedure just you can use any BIOS
none of your BIOS notes says anything about halting unsupported
processors so your good to go. Also G1 users stick to Pentium III
SECC2 processors for compatibility!! NOTE people have been having
problems with Iwill Slocket II and Video best bet is to try
another slocket or go for a Slot 1 Pentium III.
Update:
The Pentium III 1.1GHz FSB 100MHz (1100MHz) and Tualatin Celeron
1.2GHz processor will require the Powerleap
Tualatin Adapter http://www.powerleap.com/Products/iP3T.htm
The Dell Optiplex GX1 and GX1p both came from the Pentium II line all the way from Pentium II 266 to 450 and upto some Pentium III 600 Katmai as the max. The G1 came from the Celeron 266-450max.Now im sure you have an Optiplex with a Pentium II 350-600 III or a Celeron 266-400 and was wondering can I upgrade this thing to something faster than what I have and the answer is YES! You have some new options You can upgrade to Celeron 566-800 or Pentium III 1GHz (1000 MHz)Coppermine as the max. Super Slocket III is very good with dell and is worth the money or just go for the Slot 1 SECC2 Pentium III. You will need slot 1 SECC2 for 1GHz.
Your Upgrade Options are Celeron II 566-800 FCPGA or Pentium III 550e-900 FCPGA FSB 100 or Pentium III Coppermine Slot1 -550e-1000e FSB 100
Also if you
Processor upgrade does not come with a heat sink I reccomend a
golden orb socket 7/370 cool they work well and are cheap. Or on
ebay you can find the trusty Intel Heat Sink
First you want to upgrade your BIOS to verion A07 for GX1,NX1,GX1P
Support.Dell.Com - Downloads for Your Dell BIOS A07 -GX1,NX1,GX1P
support.dell.com-G1 BIOS version A09 Latest for the Upgrade
Slockets Tested to Work:
Super Slocket III (Generic)
Intel Pentium III SECC2
PowerLeap PL-iP3 v2.0
Here is a good link to buy upgrade slockets and power adapters and fans.
index.html SUPER SLOCKET III Works with Pentium III upgrades FCPGA
http://www.pccables.com - Go here to get Better Heat sinks, cables you name it!!!
Version A07 has support for the Coppermine and updated Pentium III microcode it has been reported the best for upgrades.
After you have upgraded follow instruction after it reboots go into BIOS and where it says chassis intrusion turn it to off or disabled save changes and reboot or just press ALT-B after you changed the option then after it reboots power off the system and remove cover.
Ok now take your Slocket out of package and set the jumpers to what it tells you to on the package to what your processor is.
For a Slot 1 SECC2 Pentium III just upgrade the bios to A07 and pop in the new processor and boot up!!
Once you have done that open you the latch on the white socket and place your processor in (It should fall in socket easy if not rotate processor and drop in till it goes in with ease).
Chances are that you will need
a 3 to 4 pin converter to connect your power to your fan you can
maybe pick one up at your local BestBuy, Circuit City, Comp USA,
or the net. http://store.yahoo.com/aaronix/index.html
CPU Power Cable Page
After that put cover back on and
power up system.
When you get into windows run H-oda's CPU info it should say what type of processor you have and cache and all that good stuff now you have a fast and new computer.
www.h-oda.com look for a button on the left called Download then look for CPU Info program should be at the top of download page
Now thats done replace your Old Pentium II sticker with a New Celeron or Pentium III you can get one off of ebay.com.

New! Promise ATA-100 Controller IDE PCI Card
New! ATI RADEON All-in-Wonder PRO 32MB PCI (not tested ATI cards should work!)
Applications to Install and Uninstall:
You may have to uninstall these applications they may tell you that the system is overheating and will shut it down. Dell Utilities and Dell Openmanage or Dell Inspector. This happens if you do not use the Intel Heat sink. If you upgrade to Dell OMCI 6.0 it will be fine. Also uninstall Dell Utilities from Windows it seems to shut down the PC with faster processors!
For System which BIOS have not seen PIII you may want to download the Intel Serial Program that will turn off the Processor's Serial numbers. This is mostly for the G1 computer only.
Support.Dell.Com - Intel Serial Pro for All OS 95-00-ME
Also if your PC in on a work LAN you should turn off the Wake On LAN option in the BIOS.
Now that you have a new Processor I reccomend you upgrade to Windows ME or 2000 for latest technology and performance with your new CPU.
Hardware:
For Windows 2000 its best you
get a new video card with Open GL, Glide, ICD, DirectX support
for Windows 2000. I notice in Windows 2000 there is a problem
with the graphics. For the gamer you will want a new video card
from ATI make sure its PCI and has 32MB of memory!

Here is how it looks after its all installed and setup!!!!
After Upgrading When you Power On it should look like this!
This is How you BIOS Setup (F2) Should look if you used a Pentium III 600 Katmai or Coppermine
Note if use a Celeron 663 667 etc.... It will round it off.
For example a 633 Celeron will show a a 650 but it will run at
633MHz!!
