GUYS & DOLLS
If you haven’t heard the success stories of Guys & Dolls, you need to get out more. It was a hit! Three weeks of Thursday, Friday and Saturday night shows from March 22 – April 7 and there was a waiting list for bookings at Civic Video in case of cancellations or an extension of the season.
Congratulations to everyone involved. Director Mel Bell, Musical director Maggie Tolman, Choreographer Lyndel Taylor, Stage Manager Mark Litherland, the cast, musicians, seamstresses, backstage crew, lighting and sound crew and the Bijou committee...too many people to list.
Special mention to the lead characters, Greg Ducas (Nathan Detroit), Brian Walker (Sky Masterson), Dimity Wehr (Miss Adelaide), Tracey Schlink (Sarah Brown) and Brad Oversby (Nicely Nicely Johnson) for your immense efforts. Well done.
Absolutely nothing went wrong. Except for Brian’s inflamed left cheek from Tracey’s slaps, the cap gun that wouldn’t work on queue (it worked out in the kitchen, but not in the wings when it was supposed to), the piano suddenly going a bit flat, the pamphlets for Sky that are to be handed to him….. "when they get here", the guys singing the second verse instead of the first in Oldest Established leaving them bewildered as to what to sing next, Dimity and Tracey singing about nine headaches instead of nine babies, Lyndel’s pearls repeatedly breaking and scattering, an unexpected drilling exercise by the backstage crew during intermission, Christy forgetting that her removable dress had a safety pin fixed, making it a little more difficult to remove on Closing Night performance of Take Back Your Mink......But don’t worry, nobody noticed!
The recent viewing of the video on Saturday May 5 brought everyone back together and we thank Neville Mulgat for once again putting together a fantastic video with individual credits to boot.
We are very proud of the talent that Esperance can deliver when the right team is put together. Here’s to continued growth and success at the Bijou Theatre.
As the Hotbox Girls would put on their cutest smile and cheekiest wink….. "Goodbye Now!"
AUDITIONS
For One Act PlaysMonday 21 May 2001 7:00pm at the Bijou Theatre
Directors Phil Shelton, Roma Western and Sue Abell welcome interested actors and backstage crew to attend auditions for this year’s One Act Plays.
Phil Shelton is directing Shop Talk by Colin Thiele, set in 1950’s Australia. It is a fun story of a grandfather looking after the corner shop with loads of pranks and action. The cast will be between eight and twelve members ranging in age from 16 to a senior man for the grandfather.
Roma Western is directing Plaza Suite by Neil Simon, set in present time in a motel suite. This comedy play has four characters. Two main characters (age mid 40’s) are the parents of the bride (who has locked herself in the bathroom) and two minor roles of the bride and a young man who need only to walk on and walk off (20-25yo).
Sue Abell has chosen Monday to Friday by Ian Austin, which has a cast of five women aged 20’s to 30’s. This play is set in a hotel function room and is a meeting between these five women who come to realise they all share the same lover, hence the title, Monday to Friday.
The performance dates have been set for
August, Friday 10, Saturday 11, Friday 17 and Saturday 18, 2001.One Act Plays are short (about 30 mins), low in intensity, rehearse twice a week for 6-8 weeks and loads of fun. A nice wind down from a big production such as Guys & Dolls. Excellent for those actors making stage debuts, bring along your friend and give them a nudge.
Following the AGM on March 28, the new Committee for 2001 is:
President Lyndel Taylor 9071 5103 h
Vice President Derek Clarke 9071 5062 h

Committee Mark Litherland, Victoria Young, Rod Westacott, Raleigh Sellars, Phil Shelton, Bernadine McLeary, Sharon Livingstone, Roma Western, Josette Morgan, Lora Lowe, Julie-Anne Clark, Andrew Bounds, Andrew Dean, Jayne Arnold, Carol McLeod.
Many thanks to these people for the interest they show in helping to keep the Guild and the Bijou running smoothly.
Christy McKenna has agreed to continue publishing the Bijou Bulletin although not holding a position on the Committee. All news for the Bulletin can be directed to Tracey Schlink. PS. We don’t mind a bit of gossip!!
This youth theatre program for 10-18 year-olds is now up and running. The response has been huge -- about 80 students applied. A total of 58 students are being catered for in two groups which meet weekly. A waitlist has been established and hopefully as the year progresses all interested children will be able to be included in some way.
Each week the participants are developing their skills in a range of areas including voice, movement, improvisation, characterisation and teamwork. The final sessions (last week of term) will be open to any interested parents or Bijou members to come and see what we have achieved so far.
Le Petit Bijou is run by Lyndel Taylor in her capacity as Esperance Community Arts Youth Arts Coordinator. However she needs support from Bijou members to make the program a success. Already she has several regular helpers (Sasha Hilton, Andrew Dean, Christy McKenna) and other Bijou members have committed to come and share their skills on an occasional basis. This is much appreciated. Anyone else who would like to help in any way (either at the regular workshops 3.45-5.15pm Monday and Friday or later in the year when we embark on our production) please contact Lyndel at work 9071 1214 or home 9071 5103. Besides being great fun working with these enthusiastic youngsters, this is a great way to invest in the future of the Bijou.
PRESIDENT'S REPORT 2001 - Lyndel Taylor
If I consider all the things that Esperance Theatre Guild has achieved in the past year, it is a wonder you are not all sliding out of your seats with fatigue. But there is something very energising about being involved in the Bijou which keeps us enthusiastically coming back for more. And it is this enthusiasm that has seen much achieved in the past year, both on stage and off.
Investment in the theatre has continued with a range of improvements made and equipment bought. The storeroom is now complete with the addition of shelving thanks to Raleigh Sellars, John Crawley and his crew. The theatre is much more bearable in warm weather with the addition of whirly birds, again installed by John Crawley and a working bee crew. And the Bijou repair crew swung into action to repair damage caused when a storm sent a branch through the roof of the Petite Bijou room. The theatre is benefiting from new headsets, a new vacuum cleaner, a new kitchen door, curtains (on stage and off) and snake lights.
The first of the Bijou’s precious photos are now professionally framed and donations are coming in to continue this process. The theatre’s history is also being preserved in another very high-tech way with Mark Litherland doing an excellent job of maintaining the Bijou website.
On stage, Esperance Theatre Guild members seized a range of opportunities to develop their skills and put them to use. Cast, crew and audiences alike appreciated the challenges issued when Mel Bell directed The Glass Menagerie in March 2000. Bijou performers also showed Rotarians from around the State just how talented Esperance people are when they performed at the district conference in April.
The hilarious antics of Holiday Snap, directed by Jayne Arnold, provided the laughs to chase away the winter blues. And Bijou members were out in force in September for the Festival of the Wind. Organising and performing in a range of capacities in Dare To Wear and The Great Esperance Odyssey.
The Bijou ushered in Christmas with all the fun of a pantomime. With director Andrew Dean and producer Tracey Schlink at the helm, Santa In Space was a big success. December 2000 saw auditions for Guys & Dolls, This huge musical, performed in March/April 2001, exploded into song, dance, colour and life under the direction of Mel Bell, musical direction of Maggie Tolman and choreography of Lyndel Taylor and was received by full house audiences with rave reviews.
Of course none of this would be possible without you, the members and your efforts. In particular I must pay tribute to the dedicated committee members who have steered us through a busy but successful year.
As we look forward there are already exciting plans on the drawing board. Le Petit Bijou, the guild’s youth theatre program for 10-18 year-olds has started this term. Planning is already underway for a season of one-act plays by first time directors and the committee is investigating securing a professional director to work with us again in the near future.
We should be proud of the fact there is always something happening at the theatre. With the talent and energy of the people involved, the Bijou can only continue to shine.
Sorry, Out of Bounds!
The Bio (lighting) Box that is.Due to structural constraints and the fact that crew members are trying to work up there, members and the public are reminded that the Bio Box is "out of bounds" during shows. If you feel you need to be in there you must consult with Andrew Bounds.

Have You Been Framed?
The Esperance Theatre Guild is updating its Hall of Fame with framed photographs of all Bijou Shows. The first of these professionally framed photos are on display in the Petit Bijou Room.
This is a big task and we need your help to reframe existing photographs and frame and exhibit photos from more recent shows. You can assist by donating the frame for your favourite production. Depending on the size of the photograph, this can cost as little as $50.
