First Annual Wyoming Snow Sculpting Competition

Feb 28-Mar 3, 2002, Laramie WY

When I first heard about this competition, I immediately signed up...sounded like fun, right?!? However, I think our team was seriously wondering what we were getting ourselves into about the time the blocks of snow were unveiled. My team consisted of Jennifer Coxbill, Erin Shorma, and myself, none of whom had ever sculpted anything in snow besides snowmen, and we were the only team of all girls (and students!) to boot. Each team was given an 8'x6'x6' block of snow and four days to sculpt the subject of their choice. Tools we used included everything from pick-axes and hacksaws to drywall sanders and wallpaper scrapers.  We spent many 14-hour days bringing the "Sultan of Snowy Range" to life.  The temperature in Laramie remained sub-zero all weekend, with a high of 5 or 10  degrees F - good for the snow but it certainly slowed us down a bit!  I am relieved to say that our first attempt at snow sculpting was successful, and we even garnered a third place finish in the process.
