Thierry's Prelude

Smoking-Justice is a bit of an enigma in that he comes from an entirely different era. Said to have lived in the Wild American West of 1860, Thierry appeared out of the thin air in the Caern one night, fighting with a Bone Gnawer named Jessie-Speaks-Softly. He was once a stalwart Royalist missionary, campaigning to "civilize" the rebellious Pure One tribes who baulked at Silver Fang hegemony. Now, he says, he devotes himself to restoring the grandeur of the Silver Fangs in the present.

There is speculation as to whether mages may have had a hand in his leap through time, but the arrogant Fang chooses to believe that he is an emissary on a mission ordained by Gaia herself. Truth be told, the proud young man has more than his fair share of luck in escaping danger, and he may indeed carry some mystical boon for unknown reasons. He maintains that he has come to save the future from the Apocalypse with the wisdom of the past. Gaia acts in mysterious ways.

Despite his hubris, the Silver Fang has earned renown as an efficient and capable Philodox. Well-versed on the subject of Garou history, he stands prepared to debate any point in doctrine, ultimately relating it back to his favourite theme: the need for discipline among Gaia's children, and the Divine Right of the Silver Fangs. He has a calculating and sometimes inhumanly cold manner, but he is also an intelligent, very well-educated young gentleman with all the talents of a great justice of the Litany. He also possesses some interesting enthusiasm for the conventions of chivalry. Diligent and valiant, he will lay down his life for honour without hesitation, and rumour has it that he refuses to strike any gentlewoman. Thus, despite his reputation for coldness and discourtesy among those of "lesser tribes," he can be the very image of the polite young upstart when dealing with his superiors. When he chooses to impress, he dazzles, much to the disdain of those beneath him. His obsession with personal and family honour keeps him from becoming a total tyrant, even making him an admirable role model. Even toward his "inferiors," he can be quite polite if treated with the respect he considers his due. Determined, honour-minded, thoughtful, and with a natural bearing of authority, Montcalm could one day become a great leader if he could be educated to look upon his people as individuals instead of pawns, soldiers, or rebels.

Unfortunately, though, the noble Philodox was the victim of an era and that of a terrible childhood. Born a Metis by accident in a time of Puritan ideals, Montcalm spent his youth hidden away from Garou society, learning to pretend to be something he was not. From his very early days, he knew that he was "wrong"-- a devilish freak born from a terrible crime. He grew up with a bitterness that drove him to become the perfect Silver Fang upstart, masquerading as a Homid in the Garou world. He sacrificed his happiness in the name of family honour, and this cost eventually made him a somewhat cruel enforcer of the laws of the "natural order of things." His life, in his eyes, has been a study in Original Sin, and he believes that only through a lifetime of religious work in the name of the Silver Fangs can Gaia ever love him.

What Thierry does not realize, though, is that Gaia has brought him here, through the many coincidences of the universe, for entirely unexpected reasons. With the help of his newfound sept, he must learn the meaning of compassion. Only then can he realize the wisdom of the future and return with it to the past, where the downward spiral to the Apocalypse must be thwarted before it is too late.

"One is either a loyalist or a traitor. There is nothing else."
-Smoking-Justice, before embarking on a raid of an Uktena Caern
