Quest Sixteen- by Greeneye
Lanko, Streak's coyote riding partner, was out riding yesterday and he saw a few vermin erecting a single hanging noose. Being of a species that the vermin might think they could trust, he asked what they were doing. To his dismay, they showed him around a mountain to where five Zoreners were trapped! They said they were going to hang them, for no good reason. Go free the five, rip down the hanging noose, and bring the vermin to Streak!
Taking the directions given by Lanko I found the vermin. There were about twenty of them but I I
wasn’t to worried I knew that faced with seasoned warriors they would be frightened off. I went to go
find the prisoners and saw they were guarded by one rat. I could free them right now.
Climbing up a tree than gliding over to where the guard was I was able to not step on the twigs they
had placed in the area to warn the guard. I put him in a headlock that wouldn’t let him breath or let
blood to to his head. When he passed out I dropped him like a sack of potatoes.
I proceeded to cut the prisoners bonds and lead them back to Zoren Castle. On the way to to castle
an idea was forming in my head.
Going up to the infirmary in the castle I started out the second part of my plan. I talked with the chief
healer and told her that I wanted a fruit, berry, juice, or whatever that was strong enough to put a beast
to sleep. She told me that their was a plant that grew near the Giant’s Grave that could help me with
this problem. After she gave a description of the plant I went off searching for it. Finding a nice tall tree
I put my gliding skills to good use. It was not too long before I found Giant’s Grave.
I was thinking, "Holy Wow is that big!" And it was too. That single stone was as tall as the tree’s
that surrounded it. After I got over the shock ( it was HUGE) I kept my search up and found it. After I
had gathered enough to do the job I came back. I gave the herbs to the healer. She said she would need
some other ingredients like toad knuckles and bottom of the swamp sludge and slug slime. No thank you
I would find another way. I mean I was going to slip this in their food. Even they didn’t deserve to have
that in their food.
When she started laughing in my face I realized it was a joke. It was funny but when I stopped
laughing and she hadn’t I started to get a little annoyed. When she finally calmed down she told me the
only thing I would need was to strain the plant and pour the juice in the food and drink.
Taking the prepared juice I went to the camp. I found the camp and found them getting ready to eat.
I had to take them down now. They were preparing a big pot of stew or at least I think that was what
the rancid stuff was. When the “cook” left to complain about the lack of slugs I nearly added some
flavor to the stuff by letting them have my lunch. I took this opportunity to add my own special sauce to
the liquid or solid or whatever it was. Later that night when they were all deep in sleep I was able to tie
up half of them. I nearly had a fit when I found there noose. Taking down the noose. I tied up the rest I
made sure they were tied was as painful as possible. Then I burned the rest of the contraption.
When they woke up I made them crawl all the way back to Zoren Castle. I made a normally half an
hour trip ten ten hours long. I should have taken them back right away but I figured hey why not make
them suffer like they did to others. I felt real sorry for them when I deposited them in front of the
queen. I could tell this was not going to be pretty. Also I was pretty hungry so I came to the mess to fill
up.
The hazel furred mouse stood outside the door and watched as a stray ant poked his head out from
under the door. In his tiny jaws he held a small crumb of something that looked like bread, but she
couldn't be certain because it was so small. The small red-brown creature swiftly disappeared
underneath the door once more.
Brook sighed and made vagues sketches in the dust of the cellar hall floor using the tip of her tail.
Supposedly, ants eventually slept sometime during the night. She figured if she could stay up late
enough, she'd catch them asleep and be able to get into the cellar they had invaded. In the mean time,
she got to sit here and wonder why she signed up for these kinds of missions in the first place!
Dressed in a dusty brown tunic belted at the waist with a sword belt, her sword hanging from it, the
mouse was fairly slim and pretty, though not overly so on both counts. Her light hazel eyes that
matched the color of her fur were slowly, almost against her will, trying to close. It was only with great
effort that she managed to keep herself awake.
"Just look at you," she scolded herself. "You'd think that after all this time you'd be able to stay up one
night!" She trailed off her tirade in a series of grumbles, leaning forward to rest her chin on her knees.
Minutes turned to hours when Brook suddenly realized she hadn't seen any ants poke their heads out in
quite some time. Perhaps they'd finally gone to sleep!
Hardly daring to hope it was true, the light brown mouse pushed the door open slightly so she could get
a look at the cellar. Not an ant in sight. Sacks of food were stacked head high, casks of beverages
stood together, cheeses had been rolled into one corner, and many other things. The only thing she
didn't see were the ants that had made all the food look torn and chewed, spilling grain and making the
barrels leak. Brook heaved a sigh of relief and silently thanked the otter who had told her of ants'
sleeping habits.
With a quick, quirky grin that often flashed on Brook's face before she was about to do something in a
mission, the mouse drew her sword and used it to pry a stone in the floor loose. The stone was not very
large, about twice the length of her sword blade's width, enabling her to position her sword nicely for
the best leverage. With a push on the handle, the stone came loose. The warriormaid picked the rock
up and laid it to one side.
With that done, she began to dig a hole in the bared patch of earth, using her sword as a spade. She
muttered angrily when she realized she'd forgotten to bring a spade, but went on with her work until the
deep hole about a paw's breadth all around and as deep as her blade was finished. Hopefully, that
would hold all the ants, or enough of them that she could do the rest of her job.
Using a kind of grease she'd acquired from the moles, she slicked the sides of the hole so as to make
sure then ants couldn't crawl out, then dropped some candied chestnuts into the bottom. Candied
chestnuts were sure to bring the little critters coming. Just to make sure, she made a small trail of some
crumbs leading to the hole. There. A hopefully perfect ant trap. If need be, she could make more.
Brook wiped a drop of sweat from her brow and suddenly realized that the ants had awakened and
begun their daily work of ravaging the food supply. Everywhere she could see there were small specks
climbing, chewing, and dragging things. One ant nipped her footpaw experimentally to see if she was
edible.
With a yelp, the mouse flicked the ant off, knowing that soon she'd be covered with ants unless she
could escape the cellar. The large stream of ants by the door, however, shattered any hopes of that!
Desperation, though, is a powerful weapon. Brook frantically pulled the bottle of grease out and made a
small, wide ring on the stones of the floor. She quickly brushed the ants that were inside the ring out
into other parts of the cellar. She didn't know if the ants would be able to crawl OVER the grease. The
grease had usually been used to keep ants from crawling UP.
Her heart raced as she waited in silent suspense, waiting to see if the ants would be able to cross the
feeble barrier of grease. First one ant, then another, and another came, all testing the grease as though
sensing that she were within the ring, an invader they had to get rid of. Brook watched, holding her
breath with her knees held close to her chest, hoping desperately that they wouldnt' be able to cross.
As the ants realized that their efforts to cross the greasy "river" were futile, they went on their business
of hauling off food. The mousemaid released her held breath, knowing herself to be safe until she could
get out. A wave of relief washed over her, sending her into an exhausted sleep.
She never saw the ants fall, one by one, into the trap she'd laid.
That night, she woke again, still within the greasy circle that had saved her life the night before.
No ants crawled around, so she assumed they were asleep again. However, one look in her pit told her
a different story. She hefted the rock that she'd put to the side and placed it on top of the hole, using the
pile of dug-up dirt to pack it in tightly.
Brook lifted her sword and resheathed it. Silently, she left the cellar, closing the door behind her. The
hole in the floor created the perfect tomb for the colony of ants who had foolishly tried to scavenge
every last spec of their favorite food.
Out in the night air, Brook fervently promised herself to never, ever sign up for a mission where she
had to battle large numbers of ants. They left huge, sore, itchy spots!
The lynx lay in bed with a large group of Zoreners around him. He tried to smile at them but only
caused himself more pain. Thistle came up to the large croud.
"So...this is the sick lynx" he said "hmmmmmm...I think I got it! If the venom has him sick...maybe it's
also the cure!"
A group of beasts gathered around him.
"How are you gonna get it?" asked one of them
"I'll go kill the snake!" Thistle said
"But it's so BIG!!" said another
Thistle drew his dagger. "I'll be back soon"
As he walked outside to the river where the lynx was bitten, Thistle saw something move in the water.
"Who or what are you?" he said.
"Don't come any nearer....heh heh heh..."
"Who said that?!" yelled Thistle
Suddenly, a huge snake jumped out of the water at him. He readied his dagger. The snake bit at him but
missed and hit it's face into the ground. He lifted his dagger and struck down right into the snake's
head.
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!" yelled the snake
Thistle pulled out a little bag and started draining the dead snake's venom into it. He got just enough
venom and ran over to a little tree. He plucked some herbs from the ground and mixed them in with the
venom, then ran back to the castle.
The Zoreners were surprised to see Thistle return. He ran to the lynx and leaned over him.
"Here..." Thistle said
The lynx drank the little mixture.
"ew...yucky..." said the lynx
"I hope this works" said a Zorener behind Thistle
Suddenly the swelling on the lynx was gone, and he returned to a normal state.
"YAY!!!!" yelled some Zoreners
And so the lynx was cured and later returned outside to go play in the river again.
A traveling mink came into the castle to entertain us with tales. He has been here for about two and a
half months. The first month he seemed harmless, with his quick sense of humor and sparkling eyes.
He has now rounded a good sum of our inhabitants up against us, and word has it that a fight is going to
be started. Get the mink, and bring him to Streakcat for justice!
"Get the mink?" Questioned Xavier.
"Yes." Said Streakcat. Now the mission seemed impossibly easy to Xavier, until Streakcat said there
was more than just one vermin out there. As soon as Xavier stepped out of Zoren, and a arrow
produced right next to him. He growled, and spotted a mischiveous little ferret, with a bow and some
arrows.
The ferret chuckled, and fired again. He missed awfully again, despite Xavier was a big target.
Picking up a smooth javelin, he hurled into the ferret's face, and he was dead. Just then, a score or two
of vermin started pouring out from the bushes. With the bloodlust in his eyes,
Xavier flung himself into the fray. Rats were chopped in half, and weasels and stoats lay dead
among plenty of ferrets. Xavier slashed unmercifily on his enemies with a gigantic battleaxe, cleaving
vermin everywhere. Wounded badly, Xavier fought on, and all the vermin lay dead. Upon a rock, stood
a slender mink.
Xavier threw himself at the mink, and made him fall to the ground. But he was up quickly, and tried
to flee. But Xavier was to smart for that, bounding after him, Xavier knocked him out cold with a tap
from his axe. Throwing him over his shoulder, he strode off towards Zoren Castle. Plopping the tratior
on his back in front of Queen Streak.
"Here he his, milady." Said Xavier. Streak looked at the awesome scars on Xavier, and said,
"You better get down to sick bay quick!" Xavier did the bidding, and so, the mink was captured (and
executed) and the mission wasover.
When I heard of the of what the sorceror was doing i wanted to get rid of him. I packed my sword and left. I later found the cave were the sorceror was and went in. the first thing encontered was some undead warriors, which almost scared me out of my wits! I killed them and then went to the soreror’s chamber. Therethe sorceror used all of his undead warriors and all his powers on me. I killed the warriors, but the magic i could not stop, it hit me so hard it nocked me back about six feet. I got up and charged the sorcorer before he could recharge his powers. HE then lay dead on the floor. I then went to the castle and celebrated.
