ow, let’s move further South, to Yorkshire and even more precisely: to SHEFFIELD! Sheffield, of The Full Monty fame was once known for its steel industry, but is now more distinguished by the Meadowhall Shopping Center, which is gigantic, and the Sheffield Arena where The Beautiful South once played during the golden age..... Sheffield is a general favourite of Lydien’s and there are two other Llydien-approved bookshops here. One is The Porter Bookshop on Sharrow Vale Road, take the # 60 Bus to Crimicar Lane, it goes past there. The Porter Bookshop is quite well-stocked and they lean more towards the antiquarian side.

book Llydien once bought there is The New Whole Duty of Man, Containing The Faith as well as Practice of A Christian: Made Easy For the Practice of the Present Age, As the Old ‘Whole Duty of Man’ was design’d for those unhappy Times in which it was written; and Supplying the Articles of The Christian Faith, Which are Wanting in that Book Tho’ Essentially necessary to Salvation, printed in 1787. Llydien actually owns a copy of the old Whole Duty of Man, although in a 1748 edition, and can testify that, yes indeed, the New Whole Duty is very much enlarged and improved. The original Whole Duty, should any reader be interested, was published in 1657, in the time of Oliver Cromwell....

nd then there is a very special shop in Sheffield, let’s give a big hand to....Tilley’s Vintage Magazine Shop in 281, Shoreham Street!! To go there take any bus going past Clough Road which is the nearest stop. Tilley’s is magnificent, they’ve got heaps and heaps of old magazines and newspapers. A random list of the titles found in Tilley's:

  • he Picturegoer
  • oman and Beauty(a marvellous beauty magazine from the 1920s and 30s),
  • ad Magazine (all those wonderful 1960s editions!),
  • adio Times
  • layboy,
  • ollege Humour
  • oman and Home,
  • icture Post.

ometimes they even stock American movie magazimes, but only occasionally and at rather high prices. Most of the magazines are fairly expensive, but if you are a frequent customer the owner is sometimes more accomodating.
