NZ Māori Golf Under 19 Championships for 2002

The first New Zealand Māori Golf Under 19 Championships were held at the Ballantynes Golf Club in Katikati from the 23rd to 25th September 2002.

An enthusiastic group of young men and women participated in this historic event. The feeling amongst the competitors was one of real whānaungatanga towards one another and the friendships developed will last for many years.

The NZMGA Executive would like to thank all their sponsors, including Auahi Kore, Levin Māori Wardens, Pelorus Trust and Te Puni Kokiri.

Thanks also go to:

• Vic Pirihi (Ngati Tamariki Trust) and Jamie Kupa who ran a valuable coaching clinic
• Bill Donnelly from the New Zealand Golf Association
• Rock Cribb (Owner) and Berys Surridge (Manager) of the Ballantynes Golf Club for the course which was in pristine condition and a real test of golf for our competitors
• Rereatukahia marae committee for providing accommodation for the large contingent of manuhiri (visitors) over the week and superb kai

To the families who donated the trophies and prizes, our tournament has been given mana by the kindness of our whānau. To the parents who supported their tamariki, to the NZMGA committee members who looked after the tournament and to the players who made it all possible, thank you.

Three of the four championship winners came from our association - Te Ata Rikihana, Haupai Puha and Desmond Rupapera.
