POROPOROAKI - ZANE GRAY

He Aitua. Zane Gray.

Aha kekeke noa kekeke noa e

He waikeri rerenga roimata
Kia puta ki te moana o Raukawa

We extend our condolences to Joanna Cox and the whanau whanui of Zane Gray, a long time member of the Wellington Maori Golf Association who passed away suddenly on 20 November 2002.

Zane was born in Otaki in 1951. The oldest boy of 10 children, Zane spent his formative years growing up just across the road from the Otaki Golf Club's 7th green. Zane came from a distinguished golfing whanau. His father, Ted, was an Otaki Golf Club Men's champion on 18 occasions, and his uncle, Zane (Snr), was champion 4 times and a NZ Maori Men's champion on 2 occasions.

Winning the NZ Maori Men's Championship Plate event in 2000 was one of Zane's proudest golfing achievements.

Zane was a member of the Te Marua Golf Club for 23 years and during most of that time he played for their top 36-hold interclub team. Zane (together with his friend Alex Walters) also had the distinction of playing in all 22 of Te Marua Golf Club's Masters, a four day tournament held annually between Xmas and New Year.

Earlier this year Zane was chosen by the NZ Maori Golf Association to be one of their Auahi Kore (Smokefree) role models for 2002.

Zane's dream of developing a squad of young elite Maori golfers from the Wellington region became a reality this year, following the establishment of the WMGA Development Squad. We are positive that what Zane created with the squad, will continue to grow, with his memory as an inspiration.
