The Defences of the Theodosian Land Walls

by Stephen Francis Wyley

A section of the Theodosian Land walls untouched by Turkish work crews
When the picture was taken in 1994 the water was being used by market gardeners to water their crops.
During our stay in Istanbul I also dragged Denise along a trek along the Theodosian Land walls, I got caught up with a fasination of the Seven tower complex, and we did not make all the way.

The Marble Tower.

Thanks to Peter Raftos I can provided this picture of the tower compex at the junction of the Sea and Land walls.

These are the only pictures I took of the tower complex at the union of the Sea and Land walls. Note the difference in the size of the slit compared to the embrasure behind.

The jambs on either side of the postern clearly show the 'putlog' hole used to secure the postern. So the end of the 'putlog' is place in the hole on the left then the other end is slid into place in the 'L' shape slot on the right.
