Joseph Auguste was the French-Canadian who emigrated to the U.S. He first went to Mass, but only for a short while. He eventually settled in Lewiston. He was profiled in a 1915 book entitled "Franco-Americans of the State of Maine" (J. H. Burgess ed.). In his biographical sketch it says "Mr. Picard is the oldest son of Auguste and Marie Louise (Bosse) Picard, who were married 31 years and were blessed by 14 children, 11 of whom are living". He served 38 years as a member of the Lewiston Police Department, part of the time as Captain and , just before his retirement in 1950, as acting Chief. He also was a former Deputy Sheriff. He was elected Sheriff of Angroscoggin Co. after his mandatory retirement from the Police Department. He became acting Chief of Police in October 1948.
