"By building the Great Wall (of China), the Emperor challenged my strength.(I will accept that challenge!)" declares ruthless leader of the Hun army, Shan-Yu. Thus begins the invasion of ancient China.
Once news of this threat reached the Emperor, he issued an order: "One man from every family must be recruited to serve in the Imperial Army. For a single man can be the difference between victory and defeat."
For Fa Mulan, a spirited, doesn't-quite-fit-in girl, this order will surely bring much grief. You see, the only man in her family is her ailing father, Fa Zhou, whom she endears greatly. If he goes (which he must), he will die for certain. So what does Mulan do?
She dresses up as a soldier named Ping and runs off to join the army. On the way Mulan meets Mushu, a comical, undersized guardian dragon. Khan, Mulan's cow, uh...HORSE, and the "lucky" cricket Cri-ki tags along, too.
At the WuZhong camp, Mulan befriends the Gang of Three: Ling, Chien Po, and Yao, though somehow they got started on the wrong foot. Along with their new captain, the recruits train for war.
Finally, the big day comes when the newly trained soldiers set off for battle. They have all completed their training, with flying colors, but can they withstand the Hun Army? After traveling for days, Capt.Shang and his army come accross a burnt-out village, lying in ruins.General Li (Shang's father) and the Imperial Army should have been there! What went wrong? Their answer lies ahead...in the valley below, torn, broken bodies litter the ground. General Li is dead.
The new army is China's only hope now...
Shang's army decides to take a shortcut through the Tun Shao Pass, but there, the Huns caught them off guard. Ping starts an avalanche with the last cannon, which swept away the Huns, and then saves their Captain from certain death. Ping is now a hero, but he/she is wounded!
After having her wound bandaged, Ping blew her cover. Thus dishonored, she is left in the Tung Shao Pass to go home. But a surprise awaits her and the others...some Huns have survived! Mulan mounts Khan, drags along Cri-Ki and Mushu, and heads for the Imperial City to warn Shang.
Once there, Mulan is ignored. She desperately tries to find someone who will listen, but it seems her efforts are in vain.
Meanwhile, the Huns kidnap the Emperor, and the Gang of Three and Shang attempt to save them, and fail. But Mulan arrives and hatches a plan. Mulan and the Gang of Three dress up as concubines (ugly concubines), so they can get close enough to do some damage to the Hun's plan. The "concubines" walk up to the Hun guards and cream them with friut, giving Shang the chance to fight one-on-one with Shan-Yu. Shang was losing miserably when Mulan conked Shan-Yu on the head with her shoe. Shan-Yu abandons Shang to pursue Mulan. Somehow, they end up on the roof of the palace, and with a clever trick, Mulan sends Shan-Yu blasting off on a giant-sized firework thingamajiggy. China is saved!!!!! YAHOO!
Fa Mulan is rewarded with the Emperor's crest, the sword of Shan-Yu, and eternal honor for her family.
Great movie, huh?
