Ration Cards

The sale of tobacco and alcoholic beverages (excluding beer and wine) are controlled by ration cards. Ration cards are available at PSD, located at either Agnano or Capodichino. The spouse of the military member is eligible for a separate ration card from the military member. As of this writing ration cards are good for one year from the month of issue, the program is in the process of changing to a system where the card will be good for a period of three years, the length of most tours in Naples.

 

Rationed Items

Petroleum products, including gasoline, propane, kerosene and oil are controlled items. The rationing of these items are maintained by computer by the NEX.

 

Propane (bulk gas) is rationed in the amount of 400 liters per month. The ration coupons may be purchased on a monthly basis. The only exception to this rule is: in the month your housing contract is signed you may purchase up to 800 liters. This is a one time only benefit. You may accumulate your bulk gas ration during the year, but they must be resold to NEX once per year, all ration coupons expire on 31 March of each year. As of this writing the cost of propane (bulk) was $130.00 for 400 liters.

 

Propane (bombola) is rationed in the amount of up to 200 kilograms per month. Coupons are purchased as above propane, and also expire on 31 March. At this writing 50 kilograms of bombola propane coupons cost $38.00.

 

Gasoilo (heating oil) is not rationed, however, individual delivery is controlled through the NEX with a one time contract and a one time 1000 liter minimum purchase. As of this writing gasoilo is 35 cents per liter.

 

Kerosene is regarded as nearly obsolete in Italy and difficult to obtain. If your home should have kerosene heat, provisions for rationing are available through the Ration Control Office at Capodichino. Ration is based on household size. It is unknown what the price for coupons would be. We have been told it is very difficult to find a contractor to deliver.

 

Gasoline is rationed in the amounts of 200, 300, or 400 liters, depending on the size of the automobiles engine. The ration coupons may be purchased on a monthly basis from NEX in amounts of 100 liters up to your allotted amount. You may accumulate your month's gas ration during the year, but they must be resold to NEX once per year, all ration coupons expire on 31 March of each year. As of this writing gasoline coupons were $29.50 per 100 liters. Unleaded, Super & Diesel all cost the same amount.

 

Oil: Automobile oil is also a rationed item. You are allotted up to 8 liters per month, available to be purchased in one liter increments. Coupons are controlled as above gasoline coupons. At this writing multi-grade motor oil coupons cost $3.50 per liter.

Personnel stationed at AFSouth (NATO base) may have a different ration system than noted above.
