They had been waiting nearly ten minutes and no boats had come back. Not even the rescue ship. Where they all going to die? How could so many people's lives be lost in one night? At the same time? Why did anyone have to die? Especially when the first class were in the boats and the third class left out to die? Rose thought of these questions over and over in her head.
Before Jack fell asleep he said, "Rose, promise me that you won't give up. No matter what happens, no matter how hopeless. You are not going to die here, not this night. Do you understand me? Promise me now Rose. And never let go of that promise."
Rose, crying now, shakily said, "I promise."
"Never let go." he said, trying to reassure her with a smile but to no avail.
"I will never let go, Jack. I'll never let go." she vowed. After she said that, she immediately regretted it. Jack had to go on too. What if he didn't? Where'd she be then? Alone. Alone, not knowing where to go or what to do. She had no money. She wouldn't marry Cal. That was for sure. But now she couldn't take it back. She'd already promised him.
She started to sing softly. "Come Josephine, in my flying machine...going up she goes, up she goes..." Less than five minutes later, she saw a light. "Oh no..." she thought. "I'm not dying, am I?" Then she realized it was a boat. "Is anyone alive out there?! Can anyone hear me?" the voice screamed, desperately.
Jack had fallen into a deep slumber. Rose shook him and told him, "Jack. There's a boat. Jack...Jack. There's a boat, Jack." She tried to wake him up but he didn't budge. She cried and thought to herself, "I can't leave him...I just can't! But what about the promise you made Rose? You don't want to disappoint him now do you?" Rose cried. "Jack!"
She laid her head down on the driftwood. "Come back! Come back!" she said with all her might, but her voice was barely audible even to herself.
She cried harder. But she saw the whistle in the crewman's mouth. "I'll never let go, I promise," she said and kissed Jack's lips.
"Rose..." he whispered, opening his eyes.
"Jack?!" she asked.
"Rose...a-are th-they coming back, yet?" he asked.
She kissed his face. "I thought you'd died," she said. "S-sorry but a-re they?" he asked again.
"Yes they are. I'll be right back, Jack. I-I just have to get their attention," she told him, tightly holding his hand.
"All-right. H-hurry..." he said as she climbed off of the driftwood.
She shakily swam to the officer that had the whistle. She took it from his frozen mouth and put it to her own. Then, taking a deep breath, she blew on it as hard as she could. A loud, screeching noise was repeated until the boats came to them. They pulled Rose up first and then Jack, who was in shock from the frozen state of his body. Rose laid right next to him, she wrapped her arms around him he did the same to her. Both of them trying to exchange their body heat. She kissed him over and over. She finally laid her head on his chest and fell asleep at the sound of his heartbeat.
