ALWAYS AND FOREVER
Chapter Thirty-Five

"What?" Rose asked the doctor.

"I'm sorry, Rose...you had a miscarriage."

Rose started crying.

"No...this can't be happening. I already lost one child. How can I lose another?"

"I really am sorry, Rose. Do you want me to get your husband?"

Rose nodded.

Jack walked in a few minutes later.

He saw Rose crying and immediately put his arms around her.

"What happened, Rose?" he asked gently.

"I...I had a...a...a miscarriage, Jack."

"Oh, my God."

Jack was devastated, but he remained calm for Rose.

They left the hospital and went home.

Jack took Rose upstairs and told her she needed some sleep, so she went to sleep.

The children were at Ruth's house, so he went to pick them up.

His parents had gone out of town to Texas.

At Ruth's House

"Jack, how did it go?" Ruth asked.

"Well, she had a miscarriage."

"Not again. Is she all right?"

"Yes. She's asleep right now."

"Good. Want me to keep the kids here tonight?" Ruth suggested.

"Ruth, I can't do that."

"Now, Jack, I'm no Molly Brown, but I won't take no for an answer. Rose doesn't need any stress right now."

"Well, I can't argue with that. I'll just say hi and bye to my kids, and then go take care of her."

"All right."

Ruth led him up to the kids' rooms upstairs.

Josie and Lizzy were in the nursery, and Cora had her own room.

Jack walked into the nursery, where Cora was playing and talking to the babies.

"Daddy!" she screamed, and ran into his arms.

"Hey, pumpkin," he said.

"Are we going home?" she asked.

"No, honey, you're staying with Ruthie."

"Yay! I love you, Daddy."

"I love you, too." He kissed her forehead.

He went to each of the babies' cribs and kissed them.

"Bye, Cora. Have fun. And be on your best behavior."

"I know, Daddy. I love you. Bye."

"Bye, princess. Bye, Ruth."

He hugged Ruth and gave her a kiss on the cheek, and left.

Jack came home to find Rose sitting up in bed with her head in her hands, sobbing.

"Oh, Rose." He came over to her and held her.

"Jack...this has to be a dream! It has to be."

"I'm so sorry, Rose. I am. If you want, we can stop having children."

"No, Jack...I want another child."

"All right."

He kissed her.

Jack made her dinner.

After they ate, he led her upstairs and held her.

She eventually cried herself to sleep.

When Rose was asleep, Jack started crying.

Rose woke up and found Jack crying.

"I'm so sorry, Jack."

She put her arms around him, and just let him cry.

He'd always been there for her, and it was her turn to comfort him.

They held each other all night, and fell asleep in each other's arms.
