ALWAYS AND FOREVER
Chapter Forty-Six

February 14, 1918

Dearest Rose,

My love...I miss you terribly. I wish I was there to kiss you, to hold you, to make love to you. My arms ache because you aren't in them. This is the worst Valentine's Day, because my love isn't with me to share it. Tell the kids I love them and I miss them. Tell them I'll be home. Rose, trust me. I won't let go. I promise. You don't let go, either. Well, Rose, please forgive me...I haven't slept in days. I need some sleep, or I won't be able to make it. I love you with all of my heart and soul.

Truly yours,
Jack

Dear Jack,

Hello, darling. These past few weeks have been hell. The kids miss you terribly. So do I. Josie wrote a letter to you. Lizzy drew you a picture. Cora helped Alex with his. Cora made something for you, but you'll have to see it when you get back. Hurry up and come home. I love you, Jack. Our children love you also. Everyone here is doing fine. Don't tell Pat, but Angela is pregnant! She isn't too happy because Pat isn't here. She is happy because she has a child. We went back to Chippewa Falls after I received your letter. Your parents and my mother are doing fine. I'm now at my grandmother's house. I decided to leave the children with Liz and Brian. I need some time alone. Grandmother isn't doing too well. She is recovering slowly. I'm going to go back to Chippewa Falls after I receive your next letter. We're going to stay there until you come back. I'm going to find a job there also. I love you Jack...I know you don't have much time to read this, so I'll let you go for now, my love. I miss you. We all do.

Yours always and forever,
Rose

PS: The children's gifts are in the envelope.

My love,

It's getting worse and worse here. I miss you so much. I live for your letters. The kids' gifts were wonderful. They made my day. I'll be home, I promise. The other day, a man died in my arms. It was horrific. It's just as bad as the Titanic disaster. I saw Fabrizio! He's in my unit. He said he saw Tommy, too. Fabrizio says hello. He has a little boy and another child on the way. It's great. My camp got bombed a few days ago. I'm okay. Fabri and I, along with a few other soldiers, got out of there pretty fast. We took a car and went to Paris. That's where I am now. I'll be home soon, I promise. Please stay strong, and give all of my love to everyone there. Tell everyone I love them. I have to go now. I love you, Rose.

Always yours,
Jack

Dear Jack,

I'm back in Chippewa Falls. I found a job at the theater. I finally get to act! Your last letter brought me to tears. I can't believe you were so close to being hurt. I love you, Jack, so much. Every day I walk into your old art studio. I just sit there and cry. I miss you so much. Cora and the twins have made new friends here in school. I saw Oscar and Mina with their now three kids! Two boys, one girl. They're absolutely amazing. Well, my boss is Orville Langseth. Everyone calls him Tuffy. It's funny. He's a very sweet man. My mother and him have made quite an attachment. His wife died many years ago. He's about sixty years old. My mother is fifty-six. Well, I know you have limited time, so I'll make it short. I love you.

Yours eternally,
Rose
