ANOTHER CHANCE
Chapter One

She couldn't believe that he was really dead. He had said that they were going to do so many things together. They were going to go to Santa Monica and ride horses along the beach. But they would never do that now. He was at the bottom of the Atlantic.

Rose had almost not gotten into the lifeboat, but she remembered her promise to Jack. So, she had gotten the whistle from the frozen officer's mouth and used it to get the boat's attention. She was on Carpathia now; she had been for two days, but this was the first time she had been out on deck. She had been too afraid she would see something that would remind her of Jack.

As she walked around the deck, Rose thought back to when she and Jack had been taking a very similar walk less than a week earlier. He had been the first person who had ever really cared about her feelings. He hadn't told her what to say or do. He hadn't been concerned with what was proper. He had let her be herself when nobody else would. As she thought about all this, Rose started to sob. It was the first time she had cried since Jack's death.

Then she saw him. There was no mistaking it, only one person wearing a tuxedo could possibly be down in steerage. It was Cal. Rose felt anger rush trough her body. He didn't deserve to survive! She moved towards some crates hoping that she wouldn't be discovered. Suddenly, she started feeling very lightheaded. Then her vision became blurry. The last thing Rose saw before she fainted was the glint of the sun on the bow.
