ANOTHER CHANCE
Chapter Three

"Work for you? Why on Earth would I do that?" Rose asked. She was fuming. Of all the presumptuous, idiotic things she had ever heard, this took the cake. She'd be glad when he was out of her life--for good.

"Let's continue this on deck, shall we? We're about to disembark as it is."

"I don't want to discuss this, Mr. Hockley." She headed for the door.

He grabbed her arm. "Listen to me, Rose. We've both got to get off this ship, so you might as well let me escort you up top."

Rose sighed. She would allow him this little courtesy. Then he would be out of her life forever. She would be free to live her life as she saw fit.

When they were finally in the hall, Cal said, "I suppose we should tell your mother you survived."

"No! Whatever you do, don't do that!"

"Why? She'll be so happy to see you."

"And happy to force me back into my old life. I can't let that happen!"

"Wait a minute--your old life? Since when do you have a new one?"

"You must be incredibly dense. My name is Rose Dawson. That should tell you something."

Cal seemed startled. "So, now you're going to run off and just go where the wind blows you?"

She looked him in the eye. "Yes," she said, as she disembarked the ship and disappeared into the crowd.
