April 10, 1912

It was evening of the first day on the ship Titanic. It was dark outside the ship and very cold.

Rose DeWitt Bukater sat in front of a mirror. She brushed her dark red hair and sat up when someone came into the suite. Cal. Cal was a very rich man, and Rose was his fiancée. She knew that he could be very angry, but she wasn’t afraid of him.

Cal sat down at the mirror table.

"I am giving you this," he said.

He opened a case, and Rose gasped for breath. It was a blue diamond, the Heart of the Ocean.

"Oh! Is it…?"

"A diamond? Yes." Cal put the Heart of the Ocean around her neck, and Rose touched it. It was a splendid thing!

"Why?" Rose asked.

"Because I love you, of course!"

Rose didn't know what she should say. She could only stare at the Heart of the Ocean.

Cal left, and Rose took it off. She couldn’t imagine where he had gotten it from.

Ruth DeWitt Bukater, Rose’s mother, a very respectable red-haired woman, went into Rose’s suite. She smiled and looked at Rose with her sharp eyes.

"Has he given you the Heart of the Ocean yet?" she asked.

"Yes, Mother. It's…it's magnificent."

"I know. Cal spends a lot of money on you. I'm so glad that you have found a rich man, Rose."

Rose stared in the mirror. She took a deep breath.

"You know," Ruth said. "When I was young and lived in London, I met a man named Edward, your father. He fell in love with me, but I…I didn’t love him. He played around a lot, and when I birthed you was I very unhappy. I couldn’t love him, and to bear his child...it was very bad for me. Edward played with our money, and now, it is gone. So it would be good if you were a little bit kinder to Cal, Rose."

Rose became angry, but she didn’t say anything. Ruth left, and Rose went to bed to sleep.

Next Day
April 11, 1912

Rose went out on deck. She had a white and blue dress on and a big, fashionable hat on her head.

Suddenly, she saw Cal with a young woman. He smiled at her and said something that made the woman blush. Cal gave the woman a fast kiss on her cheek and took her hand. He held it a long time, and looked into the woman’s eyes.

Rose became angry, very angry. He couldn’t do this! Cal was in love with that woman. She saw it, and she could feel it. She rushed to her mother and told her.

"Oh, my God!" Ruth said. "Now everything is ruined!" She thought for a moment. "Rose, I have an idea. You will pretend that a man is in love with you. You will pretend that you are in love with him, too!"

Rose stared at Ruth. "But…that would be a lie!"

"Rose, that's an order!" Ruth said, very sharply.

Rose went up on the deck again to look for a man. It would be a lie if she didn’t.

Suddenly, she ran into a young man. He fell to the deck.

"Oh, sir!" Rose said. "I'm so sorry. I didn’t see you!"

The man looked up and saw Rose. He gasped for breath. She was so beautiful!

"Um…I'm fine," he said, and got on his feet again.

Rose smiled, happy that he wasn’t angry. He could be a perfect match. But he was poor. Rose saw that he was from third class.

"What's your name, anyway?"

"My name is Jack Dawson. And you?"

"Rose DeWitt Bukater."

Jack smiled, and when Rose looked into his eyes, she knew that there was something special about this man.

April 13, 1912

Rose had learned about Jack Dawson very well. He was from Chippewa Falls and was poor. Rose knew that he loved her--she could see that in his eyes--and she was worried. She had do what Ruth had said, but Rose thought that she was in love with Jack.

She must tell Jack!

"Jack…I must talk to you."

Jack looked up from the book he was reading and smiled. "What is it?"

Rose took a deep breath.

"Jack, I love you, but I'm engaged."

Jack stared at her. "What? E-engaged?"

"I'm so sorry, Jack. My mother said to me to find a man who would fall in love with me."

"But why?" Jack whispered.

"Because I saw the man who is to marry me with another woman. He is in love with her."

"Do you love that guy?" Jack asked.

"Love him? Of course not! I love you."

"I love you, too, Rose. But what will we do?"

"I know," Rose said. "When this ship docks, I’m getting off with you."

Jack stared at Rose. But what about her mother?

"I'm poor, Rose. You will become tired of the life I live and want to be rich again."

"No, Jack! I don't care about money! I love you and will live with you."

Jack saw the love in Rose’s eyes, and he smiled. "All right."

Rose and Jack kissed fiercely, and she was happy. Very happy.

When Rose came into her suite, she saw Ruth. Ruth came to Rose and hugged her.

"Rose, I'm so sorry if I have made you to lie. I was so…so unhappy that I didn’t know what I told you." Ruth had tears in her eyes.

Rose saw that Ruth spoke the truth. "Because of you, I have met a wonderful man."

Ruth looked up, happier.

"Who is it?"

"His name is Jack Dawson. He's poor, but I will marry him when this ship docks."

Ruth smiled. "I hope you will be happy with him, Rose."

"I will be, Mother. Don't worry. But what about you?" Rose looked at her mother.

"I have met a man, too. His name is Nicholas, or Nick, Watson. He is rich, and I am marrying him soon."

"Are you marrying him for money?" Rose asked.

"No. I think I love him," Ruth said, and blushed.

Rose Dawson looked at the baby she held in her arms. She was in the hospital with her mother, Ruth. Jack Dawson, her husband, came in and saw the blonde-haired boy with the blue eyes.

"Hello, Jack. Say hi to Nick Dawson."

Jack could only smile, too happy for words.

The End.
