"I had hoped you would come
to me last night," Cal whispered, slightly annoyed with the recent crowd
Rose had been accompanying of late.
"I was tired," Rose
replied, trying not to show any emotion about the subject.
"Yes. Your exertions below
decks were no doubt exhausting," Cal said, an arrogant look upon his face.
The red-haired beauty, as Cal
said this, took a decent sip of her drink, then brought it to just below her
breast area. Just as Cal finished his sentence, she gave him a quick, almost
annoyed look, then set the small, fragile teacup on the round table. She took a
deep breath. "I see you had that undertaker of a manservant follow
me." Rose was just about to her breaking point when she saw the anger fill
in Cal’s eyes. Something big, but not in a good way, was about to happen. His
true colors were about to show.
Adding fuel to the fire, Cal told
her, "You will never behave like that again, Rose! Do you
understand?" Cal looked at her like she was a piece of his property.
Taken back, almost at a loss for
words, Rose seemingly came up with something proper to say, surprisingly
enough. She had never thought to do something such as this until now. "I’m
not some foreman in one of your mills that you can command! I’m your
fiancée–"
She was cut off. No surprise
there, of course. "My fiancée...yes, you are! And my wife!" She was
not cut off by what Cal was saying, but by what he did. Actions spoke louder
than words.
Cal exploded, something Rose
hadn’t ever seen him do--to her, anyway. He flipped the table over. China,
cups, silverware, and anything else that was on the table flew onto the floor.
The man quickly bent over, close to Rose’s face, holding his temper. Cal
quickly finished his sentence this time, right in front of her face. He wanted
to make extra sure that she was listening loud and clear. "In practice if
not yet by law. So, you will honor me as a wife is required to honor her
husband! I will not be made out a fool! Is this in any way unclear?"
Rose was frozen in fear. She
shook her head loosely left-to-right, completely at a loss for words. She was
afraid. Cal walked away, fuming.
He had made himself abundantly
clear, and Rose was listening. Trudy quickly rushed in to clean up the mess.
"We had...a little
accident...I’m sorry, Trudy…" Rose said, tears slowly building up in her
eyes.
"It’s all right, miss,"
Trudy reassured her.
"Let me help you..."
Rose said as she got of her chair and onto the floor, feeling even worse about
the mess that Trudy, her maid and, must she say, her only friend on board, was
stuck cleaning up the mess she had basically caused by opening up her big
mouth. Rose, you’re so stupid! she said to herself, saying it in her
head.
Rose’s thoughts were fuzzy.
Everything was just so surreal and blurry. Rose’s body slid backwards, sliding
the chair behind her backwards just a tad. The screech of the chair echoed.
Finally, the tears fell from Rose’s eyes, every bit of emotion finally catching
up to her. She was trapped, and she knew it. Even her mother knew it. But her
mother, Ruth, and even Rose herself, didn’t have the strength to say that Rose
was trapped. If they did open their mouths, there went their money and there
went them having a debt-free life.
The End.
