CAL'S LIFE-CHANGING EXPERIENCE
Chapter Three

"Here we are at the first of several stops," his mother told him. "Pay attention. You might learn something."

Cal took a bite of his lamb and spit it out. "This is raw."

"Sir, it is rare, like you asked."

Cal overturned the table and got up from his chair.

"I am going to the office for a few minutes. When I get back, I want this mess cleaned up and a new plate of lamb. If neither are done, you are fired. Is that clear?"

"Yes."

"Good," Cal said, as he was leaving.

Cal turned to his mother, and said, "I don't know why you brought me here. She got what she deserved."

"Cal, I brought you here because you need to learn from your mistakes. It is never too late."

A few minutes later, Cal from the past walked back into the dining room.

"Sara," he yelled, walking into the kitchen. "You are fired. You have twenty minutes to pack your things."

"So what? I fired her. She did not do her work. Are we through now?"

"We are through here, but we have more trips to take," his mother said, snapping her fingers.

"Hi, Rose," Jack said, walking into her hospital room. "How are you doing?"

"Okay, I guess."

"Here. I got something for you," he said, handing her a paper bag. "Sorry it is not wrapped."

"That is all right," she replied, taking the paper bag from him. "Thank you, Jack, for the movie magazines."

"I thought you would like some reading material while you’re in the hospital. How long will you be in here for?"

"Just a few days."

"That is good. I saw the accident happen. I pulled you out of the car just before it went up in flames. I hate to leave so soon, but visiting hours are almost over. Maybe I will come back tomorrow. If I do, is there anything I can get you?"

"Yes. A ginger ale."

"Yes. Is that all?"

"Yes."

"Okay, I will try to make it tomorrow."

Rose knew that she had to somehow honor the man who had saved her life.

Cal's stepmother walked into the hospital.

"Is Cal still alive?"

"Yes, but barely."

"Can I see him?"

"Yes, but only for a few minutes," the doctor replied.

"Can you tell me where his room is at?"

"Yes. It is the last door on your right."

Lucy Hockley thanked him and went to see Cal.
