THE CHIPPEWA FALLS DAWSONS
Chapter Twelve

Ruth DeWitt Bukater looked around the empty house. Elaine was checking each room to make sure nothing had been left behind. Ruth had sold everything, almost. She had kept some of their jewelry, mostly pieces that her husband had bought for them. She had kept any dresses that she thought would suit working on a farm. Rose had never known that Ruth had been born and raised on a farm in South Dakota. It was a closely guarded secret. She knew what to expect of farm life, and was willing to go back to it for Rose. Ruth was surprised at how much her daughter meant to her. Ruth had had such a hard time during the birth; she had all but ignored Rose for several weeks after. She had missed bonding with Rose.

"Everything is gone, ma’am. My bags are ready, and your trunks were sent ahead."

"Thank you, Elaine. Shall we go then?"

"Yes, ma’am."

Ruth took one more look around the entryway. She could remember when she and Charles had first come into the house. The years may change people; they hadn’t changed the house at all. Ruth turned around and with her head held high, left her home.
