ESCAPE
Chapter Nine
With speed that surprised both of them, Alice
and Rose clutched hands and ran.
They ran the length of the long, angular main
building with Cal close behind. Finally, they spotted a small room with a sign
reading Exit above the door. As they lost sight of Cal behind a bend,
Alice pushed Rose out of sight to the side of the building. "Wait for me
to come for you," Alice whispered in her ear.
She just had time to get into the small
building. As the guards approached her, she yelled to them, frantically,
"Help me! One of the prisoners has escaped and is right outside! He got
out here by posing as Caledon Hockley, and now he’s threatening to hurt me! Two
guards have been chasing him all around the buildings. All three of you must
go! I can guard the door."
The guards rushed out, and, getting on all
fours Alice motioned for Rose to come into the small building.
"You okay?" Alice asked her.
"Yes. And you’re an absolute
genius."
"No time for compliments. We’ve gotta
go."
Alice grabbed Rose’s hand and they went out
the back door.
Rose was free.
