ESCAPE: A JACK AND ROSE STORY
Chapter Seventeen

Lovejoy came through the door Jack had shut only minutes before. He looked at the couple and laughed devilishly. "My, my, my," he said. "An upper class man and his mistress."

"Lovejoy, aren't you supposed to be watching Elizabeth and not her ex-fiancé?" Jack wanted to know.

"Not now, Dawson. I'm supposed to be putting that tramp in jail for stealing the diamond," Lovejoy replied.

Rose looked at Jack, worried. "It's all right, Rose," Jack whispered. "Lovejoy, there must have been a mistake. I put the diamond in the safe."

"Well, why isn't it there? Your little whore was the only one in there with you, and surely, you wouldn't steal it. You bought it."

"Yes, and it was mine. And I'm not going to press charges," Jack said, knowing Lovejoy couldn't get him there because he hadn't given it to Elizabeth yet. "Hand me your coat, Lovejoy."

"No. I'd rather not. It's a bit chilly," Lovejoy said, a bit nervous.

"I said, hand me your coat!" Jack ordered.

Lovejoy sighed, knowing he couldn't get out of this. He took his coat off and handed it to Jack. Jack searched the left pocket, finding nothing. Then, he checked the right and found what he was looking for. "And you were saying she stole it?" Jack asked the older man.

"I...uh...I was only doing what your fiancée said," Lovejoy answered.

"Ex-fiancée," Jack corrected. "Well, now, isn't this lovely." And right then, two crewmen came towards them.

"Mr. Lovejoy, have you found the diamond?" one of the men asked.

Jack smiled. "I found it in his coat. Now, please, one of you stay here and the other get the Master-at-Arms."

Rose sighed in relief as the men did as told. She clung to Jack, silently thanking him for helping her. The only time she'd touched the diamond was when she had it on. And Jack knew that. He'd put it up while she was getting dressed.

"I need to go get Gabbie," Rose told him, her voice hoarse.

"We'll go after they lock him up," Jack said. There was a note of forcefulness that warned Rose not to go any further with it.

She, however, didn't listen to the warning. "Jack, I can go by myself."

"Rose, we'll go after I see he's that he's locked up," Jack insisted, his voice angry.

Rose got the urge to cry and throw up at the same time. What had gotten into him? All throughout the time she'd known him, he'd only gotten mad at Elizabeth and had never raised his voice to her. And he was so gentle when making love to her. She had never thought he had a rude side to him.

She released her hold on his arm, picked up her skirts, found a stairwell, and went on her way to her room.

Jack thought about going after her, but he had to see to Lovejoy's arrest.

Finally, the Master-at-Arms showed up and they locked Lovejoy in a room in second class.

Jack headed down to third class, wondering why Rose had left like that. He went to her room and knocked on the door. There was no answer. He went to Helga's room and asked if she knew where Rose was at, but Helga said she didn't know.

"She took Gabbie and left. That's all I know," Helga said.

"Thanks...if you see her, tell her I was looking for her," he said and left.

As he walked down another hallway he heard two women arguing.

"You're going to pay for taking him away from me," one woman said. As he came closer, he recognized the voices.

"He chose to leave! Now, please leave me alone. I have to get my sister to bed," the other woman said.

"Rose," Jack whispered.

"You only want him for his money. Why would you want him for any reason other than that?" Elizabeth questioned.

"I love him. That's all that matters," Rose answered.

"You're his mistress! That's all he wants you for!" exclaimed Liz.

"You're jealous," Rose marveled with a laugh. "He loves me and you're jealous because he never loved you."

Liz looked at the woman who had stolen Jack. She was right. He'd never loved her. She'd never loved him. All she wanted was the money he'd give her. The jewels he'd buy her. The name he'd place on her.

"Oh, yeah? Maybe you're right, but you stole something away from me, and you're going to pay," Elizabeth said.

When Jack heard that he walked up to her. "I don't think so, Liz," Jack said.

"Fine. You go off and marry her. See if I care. But one day, Jack Dawson, one day both of you will pay for what you've done to me."

"Elizabeth, you won't remember us when that day comes, so don't worry about it any longer," Jack said, picking Gabbie up.

"Go to hell," Liz said, and walked away, never to be seen by Jack or Rose again.
