A LOVE NEVER FADING
Chapter One

"Where to, Miss?"

"To the stars."

The stars, we could be safe there, Rose thought as she lay on the driftwood.

"Come Josephine in my flying machine going up she goes, up she goes. Come Josephine in my flying..."

The yelling interrupted Rose's singing. "Is there anyone alive out there? Can anyone hear me?"

This was their chance, their absolution. "Jack..." Her voice was barely audible. "Jack, there's a boat. Jack..." Rose paused. It wasn't possible. He couldn't have died. It wouldn't be fair. But he was. "There's a boat, Jack...Jack..." She shook his hand. She laid her head close to his. What if she just went to sleep right there with him?

"Promise me that you'll survive, no matter what happens, no matter how hopeless."

Those words echoed in her head.

"Come back! Come back!" She tried in vain to call back her saviors.

There was only one thing she could do. "I'll never let go. I promise." She watched her beloved slip into the blackness of the sea, and with him went her dreams.

Rose rolled off the wood, swam over to Officer Wilde, and grabbed the whistle from his mouth. She blew it and kept on blowing.

The freezing water surrounding him awakened Jack. He began to kick and swim violently for the surface. Finally he reached it and laid his on the wood. His head shot up. ROSE, he thought. Where is she? Jack heard the blowing of a whistle and turned his head. He was unable to make out the form, but it had to be Rose. It just had to be. He began to climb up on the wood.

Hearing a whistle blow, Officer Lowe yelled to turn the boat around. "Come about!" He turned his flashlight in the direction of the noise. Not only could he see a woman, but also in the distance he could see someone moving around in the water.

When the lifeboat reached Rose she was so weak. Lowe scooped her up and laid her in the boat, wrapped tightly in blankets. It was then her strength gave out and she closed her eyes and went to sleep. Lowe moved on to the figure he saw in the distance. It was a young man. Lowe pulled him into the boat and wrapped him in blankets. Jack was still awake, but barely coherent. He saw his beautiful Rose lying there so frail and weak. Jack wanted to grab her and revive her with kisses, but he slipped into a deep sleep.
