Believe in Snorkacks
Based on some situations originated by James Cameron.
I sat clinging to the bobbing
door, clinging to life. Rose lay shivering, lips an alarming blue. Sure, mine
looked the same. I gave her a small smile, trying to be brave. For both of us,
for both our sakes, both our lives.
"We’re going to be okay,
Rose." I tried to reassure her, reassure myself.
God, that water was freezing. I
tried to suppress my shivers, make it seem like it was okay. If only to save
Rose, I tried to be brave.
"The boats will come back
for us, won’t they?" Rose asked quietly, voice quavering from shaking.
"Of course they will."
I tried to comfort her the best I could, goosebumps crawling slowly up my arms.
We lay there, clinging to each
other for hours. I talked quietly to her, thinking of things that had happened
to us during our fateful journey; things that would make her laugh, things to
keep her mind from returning to the fate that she was sure would come. I could
see it in her eyes. Those beautiful eyes that had held a fire, unrivaled by
even my own, eyes that had held spirit, love, and unmatched stubbornness now
held fear.
Rose turned so that she was
facing the stars, twinkling unmercifully down at us. The cold that gripped my
body intensified as the wind picked up, sweeping past us. Even though it died
down again, I shivered with an intensity so great that it started to shake the
door to which we clung. I relaxed my grip before I overturned Rose.
I lay there silently, colder than
I could have ever imagined I would be. Rose started humming to herself, trying
to pass the time, I guess. All around us people started to fall into an endless
sleep that I vowed would not overcome Rose.
Hours passed, and I started
feeling a warmth kindling in my heart. It grew rapidly, turning into a burning
warmth that spread throughout my body. Now to my stomach, then my hands. It
kept spreading, warming me. The warmth reached my head last, and I realized
what was happening as my vision started to blur. I sighed as, right before my
vision blurred all together, I heard voices and saw a shape gliding through the
water. I gave Rose’s hand a kiss. She would be safe now. She would do as she
had promised and grow old. And I…I was doing what I had boarded the ship to do
in the first place. I was going home.
The End.
