JACK AND ROSE GOING TO EUROPE
Chapter Four

Two hours later, Ruth, Sara, and Beth were settled into their new cabin.

They were about to leave for lunch when there was a knock at the door.

Ruth froze, thinking Cal had found them.

"Mother, it is me. I thought you would like some lunch."

Relieved, Ruth opened the door.

Rose walked in, and set the tray on the nightstand.

"Thank you," Ruth said, helping herself to a sandwich and a bowl of chicken soup.

"You are welcome. If you need anything, just come over," Rose said, as she was leaving.

"Okay. I will," Ruth replied.

"Help yourself to a sandwich and a bowl of chicken soup," Ruth told Sara.

"I will, as soon as I finish feeding Beth," Sara replied.

"Okay, but hurry, before it gets cold."

Sara was about to answer when someone knocked on the door.

Thinking it was Rose again, Ruth opened it.

Cal pushed his way in and locked the door.

He slapped her, and grabbed her by the shoulders, and started shaking her.

"You are going to pack your things, and return to first class. I expect you back in one hour."

Ruth look at him, and replied, "No, I won't. I am staying here."

Cal was about to attack Ruth when Sara hit him over the head with a reading lamp.

Cal fell to the floor, unconscious.

Jack and Rose, hearing the noise, hurried over.

Sara was still holding the lamp.

"Are you okay?" Jack asked.

"Yes. Sara saved me from getting attacked by Cal."

*****

A few minutes later, a still unconscious Cal was taken to the ship's hospital.

After being questioned by the Master-at-Arms, Ruth and Sara were not charged with any crime.

"Do you want me or Jack to stay the night?" Rose asked.

"No. We will be okay," Ruth replied.

"Okay, but if you need anything, I am next door."

"Okay," Ruth replied.

*****

Cal was taken to the ship's hospital, where he remained unconscious.

The doctor examined him.

"Do you think he will live?" a nurse asked.

"No, but it will serve him right. I heard what kind of person he is."

"What is his name?" the nurse asked.

"Cal Hockley," the doctor replied.

"What you heard is true," the nurse said.

"Well, there is nothing for us to do, except for to see if he dies or ends up waking up."

"Why don't you take the rest of the day off?"

"Are you sure?" the nurse asked.

"Yes. If I need you for any reason, I will send for you."

With that, the nurse, whose name was Lucy, left the ship's hospital.

*****

Ruth and Sara were playing a game of cards while Beth slept.

"I am glad the ordeal with Cal is over," Ruth said.

"Me, too," Sara replied.

Someone knocked at the door.

"Who is it?" Sara asked.

"It is me, Rose. I thought you two might want to take a walk on deck."

"I would love to, but what about Beth?" Ruth asked.

"Bring her."

"Okay. We will be over in a few minutes," Ruth replied.

Ruth and Sara changed into warmer clothes, and Ruth help Sara change Beth into warmer clothes.

They went next door to the Dawsons cabin and knocked.

"We're ready."

"Okay. So are we," Jack answered, opening the door.

They headed out for a late afternoon day of fun.

After spending the late afternoon and early evening together, they all decided to head back to their cabins and go to bed.

They made plans to meet for breakfast.

"Good night," they said to each other outside of their cabins.

Ruth and Sara got ready for bed.

Sara put Beth into her crib and got into bed.

Ruth was already in bed, and was almost asleep.

"Good night, " Sara said.

"Good night," Ruth replied.

Before long, all three of them were asleep.

*****

Jack and Rose got ready for bed.

"I had fun tonight," Rose replied, getting into bed.

"Me, too," Jack replied, also getting into bed. "Try to fall asleep fast, because I want us to meet your mother for an early breakfast."

"Okay," Rose replied.

Rose dreamed of the fun she had that night, and could hardly wait to have more fun in the morning.

Within minutes, both of them were asleep.
