HEARTS ARE BROKEN, LIVES ARE SHATTERED
 Chapter Two

Written by Kelly Roberts

Rose stepped off the Carpathia to a sea of camera flashes. She hid her face behind the blanket she had taken off the ship so she would not be seen. That was all she needed, for Cal to see her in some newspaper.

Once she broke free from the crowd, she made sure to get far, far away from them. All around her, newsboys were trying to sell newspapers about the disaster, and she could see that the headlines told people nothing of the true horror of the Titanic tragedy.

Fear overtook her once she broke loose. She had nowhere to go. She had no family in New York, except an aunt. But she was not going to see her. Mary was her mother’s sister, and she knew that she and Ruth were the same person. She tried to think, to remember if any members of her father’s family lived in New York, but there were none. They were all in Philadelphia, and she was not going to go back there. She was not going to risk her mother and Cal seeing her again. She would never go back to them.

She had reached the point of desperation. She didn’t know where to go. She sat down on a park bench, and prepared to spend the night there.
