JACK AND ROSE: TOGETHER FOREVER
Chapter Thirty-Nine
"You think they're going to let us down
there?" Rose asked. Jack and Rose were on their way to third class for the
party. They had somehow managed to escape from dinner and without to much
suspicion they had sneaked down below decks.
"I don't know. But I hope so. I actually
don't see why they wouldn't. But we'll see," Jack said.
Rose nodded and looked around for some sort
of entrance. They could both hear music coming from somewhere. Suddenly they
turned a corner and saw an open door. The music was coming from that.
"Here we are," Jack said.
Rose smiled and took Jack's hand. They
cautiously stuck their heads in the door and looked around. It looked like the
party aboard the Titanic, just a little smaller. The same kind of music was
playing and people were dancing similar to how they had been dancing on
Titanic. Jack motioned to Rose and they walked quietly to the back of the room.
"Do you think anyone noticed?" Rose
asked as they watched everyone.
"No, I don't think so," Jack said.
He slipped off his jacket and hung it on a near by chair. "Ready
Rose?" He asked holding his hand out.
"Jack, what if someone gets mad or
something?" Rose asked worriedly looking down at her nice dark blue dress.
"I mean we don't exactly fit in."
"Rose, I bet they won't once they
realize we're not here to stare and make fun of them. Now, c'mon." Rose
took his hand and Jack led them out to the dance floor. Once they were out in
the middle of the floor, Jack took Rose into his arms. "Now Rosebud. We're
gonna have to get as close a possible." It was all Rose could do to keep
from laughing. Jack pulled Rose closer to him and they moved into a dancing
position.
"I don't know the steps," Rose said
trying not to laugh.
"Now Rose, like I told you before, don't
think."
Rose closed her eyes as Jack started leading
her around the dance floor. Around and around they went. Faster and faster
until Rose forgot she was even on a ship. She screamed as Jack quickly turned
and went the other direction. "Jack slow down!" she yelled. But Jack
just laughed and kept on going. Suddenly Jack stopped and dipped her down. Rose
grinned up at him as the song stopped. "Why Mr. Dawson, what are you
doing?" she playfully asked.
"Nothing, I just like seeing your
beautiful face this way."
Rose smiled brightly as Jack brought her up.
She reached up and took out her upswept hair so it fell down her back.
Jack smiled and looked around. Suddenly
something caught his eye. In the middle of the room was a platform with people
dancing on it. "Hay Rose," he said taking her hand, "look over
there."
Rose looked as to where he was pointing. She
smiled at Jack.
"Care to show these people our
stuff?" Jack asked.
"Jack that was two years ago. Do you
really think we can still do all that?"
Jack nodded, "Of course. We didn't know
how to do it then, so I think we can figure it out with a little practice
already don't ya think?"
Rose smiled brighter at Jack. "Well, I
suppose so."
Jack grinned and pulled her toward the
platform. Rose and Jack climbed on top and grinned at one another. As Jack did
his little jig, Rose took off her shoes and set them down on the edge of the
platform. When it was her turn, Rose pulled up her skirts and started her part
of the dance, trying to remember it. Then Rose and Jack grabbed each other's
hands and spun around. Rose laughed and screamed as Jack squeezed her hands
tighter. Jack, too, laughed and screamed along with Rose. Suddenly, the music
stopped and Jack and Rose both let go at the same time. They went flying to the
opposite ends if the platform. Rose, laughing, landed sitting on the platform
while Jack somehow managed to keep his balance. He came over and helped Rose
up.
"You okay?"
Rose could barely talk through her laughter,
"I am fine."
Jack grinned, "You sure?"
Rose nodded, "I am fine, believe me.
Just a little dizzy. I think I should sit for a minute or two."
Jack nodded and they walked over to a table.
He grabbed some drinks and they sat down next to another couple. Rose, of
course, drank down the beer faster than Jack did. "I guess first-class
girls can drink," Jack said, his eyes teasing her. This caused Rose to
laugh and she shoot her mouthful of beer to the floor and all over herself.
Jack laughed and looked at his wife while she tried to clean herself up. She
looked happier then he had seen her in a while. Jack fingered her fears of the
ship had gone.
Rose noticed he staring at her.
"What," she asked.
Jack shook his head, "Nothing. You want
some help?"
"That would be great thanks." Rose
said. Rose cleaned her face up while Jack cleaned her arms up. Once this was
finished, Rose checked herself over. "I think that's a little
better."
Jack nodded, "Do you wanna sit another
dance out or join in this one?"
"Let's sit this one out Jack. I still
fell a bit dizzy." They watched the other people dance to a jig when
suddenly someone behind them asked, "Hay! What are you two doing
here."
Rose and Jack turned, half-expecting Mr.
Lovejoy to be there. But of course he wasn't. It was a third-class passenger
with brown hair and dark brown eyes.
"We just thought we'd come down for the
party. That's all," Jack explained.
"We didn't think anyone would
mind," Rose added.
"Oh I don't mind at all," the man
said. "It's just weird seeing a first-class person down here who's not making'
fun of us that's all. I am Jason." Jason extended his hand to Jack, then
to Rose.
"Hello," Jack said as he shook his
hand. "I am Jack, and this is my wife Rose." Rose shook Jason’s hand
and smiled at him.
"So where you two headed?" Jason
asked.
"Paris," Jack answered not offering
anymore details.
Jason nodded, "Us too, my wife, kid, and
me. Kelly, my wife, her mother lives over there. They are originally from
Ireland, but Kelly and her family moved down there when she was seventeen. We
meet in American when she was staying with her aunt."
Rose smiled, "So you have any
kids?"
Jason nodded, "Just one. Aaron is his
name. He is five. You all have kids?"
"No, not yet." Rose answered
smiling at him. Suddenly a small lady come up and stood by Jason.
"Rose, Jack, I'd like you to meet Kelly
and my son, Aaron."
Rose and Jack said hello to Kelly and Aaron,
who was a bit shy.
"I am sorry to interrupt," Kelly
said with an Irish accent. "But Jason, I have to take Aaron back to the
cabin. He's not felling well and is very tired."
Jason nodded, "I'll go with you. Give me
a minute." Kelly nodded and started walking off with Aaron. "As you
all can see, I gotta go. Maybe we'll talk again."
"Maybe," Jack said.
"We'll see ya later. Bye!" Jason
called as he left.
"Bye!" Jack and Rose called after
him.
He's nice," Jack commented.
Rose nodded, "Yeah, all of that family
seams nice."
Jack agreed and looked at the people dancing.
"Still wanna dance Rosie?"
Rose looked at him, "Are you
crazy?" She took his hand and Jack led her out to the dance floor.
************************
Rose and Jack were walking out on the boat
deck late that night after the party. All Rose could think about was that
conversation she and Jack had had after the third-class party on Titanic.
"Jack?"
"Hmmm," Jack said putting his arm
around Rose as they walked.
"You know that night when you asked me
what I would wish for?"
"Yeah," Jack said looking down at
her.
"Well, what did you wish for?"
Jack smiled, "You. I wished that by some
chance of fate you would come to me instead of Cal."
Rose smiled, "I wished that I could be
with you instead of Cal. I wished you would just take me in your arms and hold
me tight. Take away all my pain in a way. At least that was the first part. I
went back to my cabin and thought for a while. And then I wished that you and I
could run off and get married. And have a family together."
Jack looked at her shocked, "Are you
serious? You had only known me for twenty-four hours or so and you still wanted
all that?"
Rose nodded, "It was twenty-four
wonderful hours. And I never wanted it to end. I don't know, but I just wanted
that desperately. I though I might have a chance until Cal and Mother squashed
that idea for me. But look what happened. We made it through. We
survived."
Jack stopped walking and looked at her.
"I love you Jack," Rose whispered.
"I love you more," Jack whispered.
"No way," Rose said, kissing him
before Jack could argue with her.
