JACK AND ROSE AFTER TITANIC
Chapter Six
The Next Morning
Jack woke up to the smell of bacon and eggs.
Smiling, he got out of bed, putting on his robe, and headed downstairs.
*****
Rose was at the stove, making herself fried
eggs and bacon. "How do you want your eggs?"
"Scrambled, please," Jack replied,
sitting down.
"How many do you want?"
"Three, and please put the bacon in the
scrambled eggs."
Rose started Jack's eggs, when Ruth walked
in. "Rose, you’d better sit down, There is something I have to tell
you."
Rose put the finished eggs on a plate. She
put the scrambled eggs in front of Jack. She sat down beside Jack. "What
do you have to tell me?"
"Rose, your older sister just got a
divorce from her husband. She needs a place to stay. I suggested the guest house."
Rose took a bite of egg. "Sure, she can.
Where will you stay, though?"
"I am moving in with Molly. She just
bought a house down the street."
"When are you moving?"
"Sometime next week."
"Do you need any help?"
"No. You take it easy."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, I am sure. I will see you two
later."
Rose carried her dishes to the sink. "I
hope you don't mind that I agreed to let my sister stay in the guest
house."
"Not at all," Jack replied.
"Are you ready to go on a walk?"
"Yes, I am Let me go and get dressed."
*****
While Jack was upstairs getting dressed, Rose
cleaned up the kitchen. The phone rang. She went to answer it.
"Hello," she said.
"Is this Rose Dawson?" the voice on
the other end asked.
"Yes."
"We have some good news for you. We
caught the man who started the fire at the studio. He was the same man who
almost killed your husband."
"When will he be brought to trial?"
"He won't. When he was confronted with
the evidence, he pleaded guilty to both counts."
"Thank you," Rose replied, hanging
up.
Jack walked into the kitchen. "Who was
that?"
"It was a police officer. He told me
that Cal had pleaded guilty to arson and to trying to kill you."
Jack walked over to Rose. "Thank God. I
don't want you under any stress."
