A tear found its way down her cheek as Rose looked up at her second child. A beautiful baby girl lay in the arms of one of the nurses, crying in that adorable way only newborns can achieve. A smile graced Rose’s lips, but she felt slightly bitter.

Jack should have been squeezing her hand delightedly. Not Dean Calvert.

True, her first child had been Jack’s--without Dean’s knowledge, of course--and therefore Jack Fabrizio Calvert--which she had named her son--would always hold a special place in her heart. Still, though, it wasn’t the same.

She closed her eyes for a moment, envisioning the scene as it should have gone. Jack would be standing to her right, smiling down at her with those radiant sea-blue eyes, and she would be holding his hand with nothing short of pure love and adoration.

But Jack wasn’t there. He would never be there.

"Her name, Mrs. Calvert?"

Rose opened her eyes, the image of Jack slowly sinking away, much like his body had that night. With her blank stare, Rose looked from the nurse to her new daughter, and suddenly remembered a memory from years ago.

His arms were encircled around her waist, and they were flying over the sea together. There was nothing but himself, herself, and the ocean. Rose had never felt so free in her life, and Jack had never felt so alive. It was the most beautiful moment of her life, except for perhaps the night that she consummated the marriage that would never happen with the one man she would ever love. The wind flew around them, trapping them in a sphere of perfection. And she would always remember his voice, the silken voice that would forever be imprinted into her mind. Come, Josephine, in my flying machine.

Her eyes refocused as the memory blew away, and she looked at her daughter. "Josephine," she decided at last. "Josephine Elizabeth Calvert."

Everyone in the room thought that her tears were those of joy.

The End.
