LET’S LEAVE THE PAST BEHIND
Chapter Three
The next day, Rose was allowed to
go and look for Jack. She found him on the other side of the room, sleeping
peacefully. She sat on the side of his bed and ran a shaky hand through his
golden hair. He looked so peaceful and angelic. If only he would open his
eyes…tell her that everything was all right now. That soon they'd be on solid
ground.
"Name, miss?" An
officer came up to her, a clipboard and pen in his hand. Rose looked at the
officer and sighed.
"Dawson. Rose Dawson. And
this is Jack Dawson…my husband." Rose turned back to Jack.
"Thank you." The
officer nodded before walking away.
"Oh, Jack, wake up."
Rose began to sob, and hid her face in her hands, at a loss as to what to do
next.
"How about making Dawson
your real last name?" a weak voice asked, a cool hand touching her arm.
Rose looked up, to stare into a pair of bright blue eyes.
"Jack…you're awake."
Rose sniffed, wiping away her tears.
"You are, too. Where are
we?"
"The Carpathia hospital.
We've been here for a couple of days now. Molly said that you have a case of
hypothermia. It's a wonder that you survived that water for so long."
"Well, I made a promise. And
you know me. I never break a promise." Jack smiled weakly and squeezed her
hand. "Now, answer my question. How do you feel about making Dawson your
official last name?"
"I'd like that very
much." Rose smiled, leaning down and gently kissing his cool lips. She
couldn't help but wonder when he'd start feeling warm again. "We'll marry
once we reach New York."
"We have no money,
Rose."
Rose smiled, remembering what she
had found in the coat pocket of the coat that Cal had given her. "Cal has
given us a wedding gift, Jack. The Heart of the Ocean and about five thousand
dollars in cash. Enough to not only get us married, but to help us get started
out."
"When? How? Was he mad about
you leaving him?"
"Well, he didn't give it to
me personally. I found them in his coat pocket. I know we should probably
return them, Jack, but after all he's done to us...he owes us this. Don't you
think?"
Jack just looked at Rose and
shook his head. "What am I going to do with you, Rose?"
Rose smiled. "Marry me and
make me the happiest woman in the world." Rose laughed, leaning down to
hug Jack tightly, thanking God that he had spared Jack's life. She wouldn't have
been able to go on without him.
