MAGIC MORNING
Chapter Five
Rose woke up early the next morning. She had
thought about Jack all night. She had never had such a good conversation with
anybody in her whole life. She knew Jack was the only person that could make
her feel this way.
She went to his room which was not far from
her stateroom. She didn't know what she was going to say, but she just wanted
to see him. She knocked slightly on the door.
"Hello Miss DeWitt Bukater," Jacob
said as he opened the door.
"Hello Mr. Dawson," Rose replied
politely. "Is your nephew here?"
Jacob smiled at her. "Yes, I will go get
him, come on in," he said as he opened the door for Rose.
Rose looked around their stateroom. It was
very much like hers. Nice and clean. Rose wondered what the third class cabins
might look like.
"Rose," Jack said, coming into the
room. "Good morning."
Rose smiled. "Good morning, Jack. I'm
sorry to bother you so early...I was wondering if you'd like to go for a walk
before lunch."
Jack smiled back. "I'd love too."
Jack and Rose walked out of the room quickly.
They both wanted their friendship to stay somewhat private. Rose knew that Cal
would have a fit if he knew how much time she was spending with Jack. Jack knew
his uncle wouldn't like Jack seeing a girl who was engaged. Especially when
she's engaged to Nathan Hockley's son.
"Jack," Rose started. "I bet
you are wondering why I came. After our talk last night, I just couldn't get
you off of my mind."
There was silence for a few moments.
"I couldn't get you off of my mind,
either," Jack replied.
Rose looked up at him and their eyes met.
They walked out onto the deck. The sunlight hit their faces. It felt good to be
alive.
"So," Jack said. "What are
your plans when you get to New York?"
"Well," Rose replied. "I wish
I had different plans...you pretty much know what's going to happen to
me."
Jack did know. She was going to marry Caledon
Hockley. She was going to live a worthy life. But, she was also going to live
in a life full of loneliness, fear, and no control. Jack knew she needed help.
"What about you Jack?" Rose asked.
"What are your plans?"
A slight breeze blew by and reminded Jack
what he wanted to do with his life. And what he didn't want to do in his life.
"Well," Jack said. "My uncle
wants to go back to Boston...but I'm thinking about heading out to Santa
Monica."
"Where's that?" Rose asked,
interested.
"Where's that?" Jack said with a
laugh. "It's right next to Los Angeles. I've only been there once, but
it's wonderful."
Rose smiled. "What is it like?"
"It's beautiful out there. You can do
everything!" Jack said. "The best part is the pier. I love it
there."
Rose wished that she could be as free as
Jack. She wished that she didn't have a fiancé to tell her what and what not to
do.
"Say we'll go there sometime to that
pier," Rose said. "Even if we only ever just talk about it."
"No," Jack said. "We'll do it.
We'll dink cheep bear. We'll ride on the roller coasters till we throw
up."
Rose started to laugh. Why were all other
first class guys stuck up? Jack was the exact opposite.
"And we'll ride horses on the beach,
right in the surf. Now you'll have to do it like a real cowboy none of that
side saddle stuff," Jack said.
Rose's eyes widened. "You mean...one leg
on each side?"
"Yeah," Jack replied.
"Can you show me?"
Jack nodded. "Sure, if ya like."
"Jack," Rose said. "I've never
met a guy like you. You're so kind and funny. All other guys are dull and
boring."
Jack smiled. "Rose, you're not like any
other girl...woman I've ever met."
"Is that a compliment?" Rose asked
with a laugh.
"Yeah....it is."
