RUTH'S REDEMPTION
Chapter One
A week after the sinking of Titanic, Cal came
up to Ruth. "Since Rose died on the Titanic, I see no need to support you
any longer. I will give you a week to be out of this house," he said,
walking away.
"No, Mr. Hockley. I am leaving now. I
have already made plans to move in with Molly Brown. She will be here any
minute."
"Good. The sooner you leave, the
better."
A few minutes later, Molly picked up Ruth,
who had only left the Hockley mansion with a single suitcase.
"Are you ready?" Molly asked.
"Yes, I am," Ruth replied, walking
out without turning around.
*****
Rose felt in her coat pocket and was
surprised to feel something heavy.
"Jack, what should we do with
this?" she asked, holding up the Heart of the Ocean.
"Maybe we could sell it and find a place
to live."
"Good idea," Rose replied, putting
it back in her coat pocket. "But for now, we can use the couple of
thousand dollars that Cal had put in the coat pocket as well."
"Okay," Jack agreed, helping Rose
to her feet.
*****
A few minutes later, they spotted a sign that
read ‘Rooms to Rent--Five Dollars a Week‘.
They decided to go in and check it out.
"Can I help you?" a middle-aged
woman asked.
"Yes. We would like to rent a
room."
"For how long?"
"Probably a month."
"Okay. That will be twenty
dollars."
"Okay. Thank you. What is your
name?" Jack asked.
"Emily Jones," she replied, handing
them a list of rules. "Take the stairs and walk until you reach the end of
the hallway. The room on your left is empty."
*****
Jack and Rose walked into the small room.
Besides the bed, the room had a nightstand, a small dresser, a closet with a
few hangers, two chairs, and a lamp that hung over the bed.
"So, what do you think?" Jack
asked.
"I think it is wonderful, Jack,"
Rose replied.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, I am sure," Rose replied.
"I love you, Rose," Jack replied.
"I love you, too, Jack," Rose said,
kissing him.
After a few minutes, Jack pulled back, and
asked, "Are you hungry?"
"Starving."
"Good. I make great grilled cheese
sandwich. You want to try one?"
"Sure I do."
"Great. Let's go to the kitchen,
then."
*****
Jack and Rose walked downstairs. "Is it
okay if I use your kitchen?"
"Sure," Emily replied. "But
after you’re done, clean up your mess, or you will no longer be allowed to use
the kitchen."
"Thank you," Jack replied.
A few minutes later, Rose took her first bite
of a grilled cheese sandwich.
"So, what do you think?" Jack
asked.
"This is wonderful," Rose replied,
taking another bite.
*****
After they had finished their lunches, Rose
and Jack cleaned up their mess and head back upstairs.
"So, what do you want to do?" Jack
asked.
"Since we both need new clothes, how
about shopping? We can use the money Cal put in the coat pocket. I don't need a
lot, just a few simple dresses, some underwear, and a pair shoes."
"Okay," Jack agreed.
Rose walked over to the coat she had laid on
the chair, and started to feel dizzy. "Jack, maybe we should wait a
minute. I’m starting to feel a bit dizzy."
"Maybe you should lie down for a
while," Jack suggested.
"Good idea," replied Rose, walking
to the bed, but she fainted before she reached the bed.
"Rose!" Jack yelled, rushing over
to her. He picked her up and carried her to the bed. He then went downstairs and
called the doctor, not knowing what was wrong with Rose.
