SWING
Chapter Eleven

Darting through alleyways, and running down side streets, they finally reached an abandoned building, and ducked inside. Jack peeked out enough to see the youth run past the building and into the dark night.

"It’s okay, Rose. We’ve lost them." Jack sighed, leaning against the wall, exhausted. He looked over at Rose, to see her sitting on the floor, her head in her hands, her shoulders wracked with her sobs.

"Hey." Jack knelt beside her, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Hey, it’s all right now. They’re gone."

Rose looked at him, her green eyes gleaming with tears and fear. "But aren’t you angry? I mean…you should hate me…"

"Why?"

Rose swallowed. Why was he dragging things out, making her tell him what was already obvious? "Because my father was a Jew, Jack."

"Why should that make me hate you, Rose?"

Disbelief shone in her eyes. "Because you’re German, and I have Jewish blood coursing through my veins. That’s why."

Jack sighed. "Let me guess. That’s what your mother’s been hanging over you head to make you date Cal. Am I right?"

Rose simply nodded. "Now you know why I have to do what she wants. Jack, she’s already threatened to call the authorities, if I don’t adhere to her demands."

"Well…by the look of things, the authorities already know. I’d say that makes that little deal null and void."

Rose bit her lip, wiping away her tears. "I don’t know, Jack…I rather not chance it. So you don’t hate me, then?"

"No, Rose. I don’t hate you." Jack tenderly touched her face.

Relief shone in her eyes. She was sure Jack would turn his back on her, and never want to see her again, but instead here he was, comforting her, and reassuring her of his affections. "In fact, Rose…I more than like you."

"Jack…" He didn’t allow her to say anything else. His lips were gently pressed against hers, plunging her into a world of sweet sensations.

"We better get going before they come back." Jack got up on his feet, and pulled Rose up along with him. "I’ll walk you home."

Rose simply smiled. "Thank you, Jack."

Jack simply smiled, holding out his hand. "Come on. Let’s go home."

Making sure that the Nazi youths were all gone, Jack led Rose outside, and together they disappeared into the dark night, their trust fully in each other.
