Payne Stewart Memorial Page

In Loving Memory of

William Payne "Avis" Stewart

1957 - 1999

The golf world suffered a great loss on Sunday, October 24, 1999 when the Learjet carrying Payne Stewart to the PGA Tour championship in Dallas, Texas crashed just south of Mina, South Dakota. There were no survivors. Among the dead were Stewart, two of his agents, the two pilots, and a world-renowned golf course designer. Payne Stewart was my favorite golfer on the PGA Tour. He was a remarkable and colorful player. He is remembered for his unmistakable knickers, Tom O' Shanter hat, and smooth, elegant golf swing. Once nicknamed "Avis" for his runner-up finishes (25), Stewart drove it straight and was a marvelous iron player. I have many fond memories of watching Stewart play on many of his 18 tournament wins, 11 of which were on the PGA Tour. His career spanned 2 decades of grace and glory. My condolences go out to his wife Tracy, son Aaron, daughter Chelsea, and his fellow players on the PGA Tour. From his picturesque golf swing to his colorful knickers, he was one of a kind and irreplaceable. He was one of the greatest players ever to play the game of golf. Payne Stewart was a classic in every way.

This week's poem comes form a post on the AOL message board in memory of Payne Stewart. It was written by a loving fan to the children of Stewart.
