The Eight Mahayana Precepts

These precepts were created to keep us mindful of the Mahayana motivation which is to eliminate the suffering of all sentient beings and to lead all sentient beings to enlightenment. It is particularly auspicious to take the eight Mahayana precepts on full moon or new moon days or on other Buddhist celebratory days. The precepts are to be followed for a 24 hour period. Although the duration is short, it is still very beneficial. One is able to assert control over non-virtuous activities, which will help in the accumulation of positive merit, in stablizing the mind and the surrounding environment, in providing a more amenable state for meditation, and in fostering rebirth in the higher realms and eventually the attainment of enlightenment.

The Eight Mahayana Precepts:
(1) Refrain from Killing (Directly or Indirectly)
(2) Refrain from Stealing
(3) Refrain from Sexual Activity
(4) Refrain from Lying and Deceiving
(5) Refrain from Intoxicants
(6) Refrain from Eating More than One Meal that Day
(7) Refrain from Sitting on Animal Skins or on a High, Expensive Bed or Seat with Pride
(8) Refrain from Wearing Jewelry, Perfume, and Cosmetics and Singing, Dancing or Playing Music with Attachment
