But when scenes in Hollywood movies showed glamorous stars performing their ablutions in lavish bathrooms, the idea of luxury in the lavatory began to catch on. Manufacturers of plumbing fixtures seized this opportunity to market expensive, opulent products for the bath. Bringing Up Father: The Illustrative Style of George McManus
George McManus's comic strip "Bringing Up Father" was carried in newspapers across the country from 1918 to the 1940s. (A modern version of it still runs in some papers today.) It was the story of Maggie and Jiggs, a newly wealthy immigrantcouple. Maggie is intent on gaining entry into high society, but the long-suffering Jiggs would rather spend his days at the pub. McManus was a talented illustrator who drew Maggie and Jigg's fashionably Art Deco home in great detail.
