"Kanzaki Hitomi?"

"Hai!" replied a voice from the left side of the classroom.

"Domo arigatu. Uchard Yukari?"

"Hai."

The bustle continued in the busy classroom. It was always so exciting on the first day of school. But it wasn't Hitomi's first day back at school. She had been coming for two weeks for track practice. Since Amano graduated last year, Hitomi was the new senpai. She was so excited about everything on the track team. She was not happy, though.

She felt lonely. She wished that she could see him again. Just one more time. She was not whole without him. Her best friend, Yukari, said that she felt the same way. She was so happy when Amano didn't move to England, but this year, he had to go to university in Kyoto. She said that she felt the same as Hitomi about not being able to see her boyfriend. But she never knew. Hitomi had never told Yukari the whole story. It was too popostorous. Yukari would never believe her. Instead, Hitomi said that she had fallen in love with a boy that lived in Italy.

"At least you can visit Amano." Hitomi thought. She felt guilty for lying to Yukari, but she couldn't tell anyone what happened. She vowed that she never would.

As he placed his fingers to his lips and then to hers, he felt as though she would never doubt him, never dispute him, never leave him, and he knew that he could never do those things to her. Merelu was sound asleep. Van did not know what he should do with their relationship. He knew that he loved her. But not that way. Not the way he loved… Merelu had confessed her love to him a few days ago, which flabbergasted him. Even still, he did not know how long he could wait. He knew he'd never love again the way he did during the Great War. As he thought about this, as he often did, his mind wandered back to his one true love. As her name swept past his lips in a passionate whisper, he succumbed to the temptation of sleep, "Hitomi."

-3-

As Hitomi walked home through the tunnel, she wondered if she would ever see him again. It had been two years, already. They kept each other in their hearts and were able to communicate, but it just wasn't the same. She longed for his touch. She thought about it. She had never kissed a boy when she left for her journey. She fell in love with Allen, the heavenly knight of Asturia, and then him. But she had never kissed him. She felt almost dirty when she realized that she had never been with any man other than Allen. She decided right then and there that she would return, and see her love again. Suddenly, she realized that her mind was wandering. She decided that now was a good time for ice cream.

-4-

Van shot up. He knew that he had fallen asleep in Merelu's bed. He wondered if she had noticed. Luckily, she was still asleep. He crept out of her room. He knew he couldn't sleep. He had had that dream again.

"Oh, Hitomi. Where are you?" His dream was the same every time. He was with Hitomi. They were about to kiss. Then suddenly, a ciba claw burst through her. Van was splattered with his love's blood. He tried to see the source of the claw, but his distress and anger blurred his vision. He clung to Hitomi. And as she was dying in his arms, she said something that he didn't understand.

She said "Van, the sun may set with me now, but Fanelia's son will the sun rise with. Do not be sad. A new day is coming!" He thought about getting a dream interpreter in to help with the problem, but it was much too personal. He knew one thing, though; if he didn't do something, Hitomi would be hurt, and he didn't want that. No matter what, even if he had to die.

He opened his dresser drawer and pulled out the pendant. He held it so close to his heart and said again "Oh, Hitomi. Where are you?" With that, that familiar ray of light appeared on his four-poster bed and he knew it would not be long until he saw Hitomi again!

"Your greatest wishes will always come true if you have no doubt in your heart."

Hitomi heard the words of her grandmother echo in her head. She stopped right there, under the bridge and said to herself, "I will see Van again, I wish to see Van again. Oh, Van! I love you!" Like magic, that column of light engulfed her and as she rose into the sky, she said "Sumimasen, Oba-san."

-6-

Hitomi opened her eyes. She was sitting on a four-poster bed with a canopy that was so beautiful, she knew that she had to be in Fanelia. She spied around the room slowly, because her eyes were still adjusting to the low amount of light.

"Hitomi!"

Her head shot to the source of the sound. As her eyes focused, she saw Van.

"Oh, Van!" she cried, the tears welling up in her eyes. "Oh, Van, I've missed you so much!" She leapt into his arms and he welcomed her with a broad smile and a warm hug. She stepped back for a second or two to admire his appearance. He had grown about 15 cm! His shoulders were slightly broader, too. His hair was longer than she remembered, also. He was even more handsome than ever!

Van took a deep breath and said, "Hitomi, how I missed you! I'm so happy!"

Then, after a long pause, Hitomi said, "I love you."

Van looked into at her with sensitive, loving eyes. Then, he took her in his arms and kissed her passionately, and said "I love you, too." with his deep, sexy voice.

Hitomi didn't know what to say. She just turned her head to the side a little, and kissed him right back.

Merelu woke to the sound of the breakfast bell chiming three times. "Yummy!" she screamed, as she scrambled out of bed. She looked in her closet and took out her favorite, shortest dress. "Maybe today, Master Van will…"she thought as she checked the mirror and started grooming herself. She almost leapt with joy at the thought. "Oh!" She ran to the door and reached for the handle, when it suddenly opened. It was Megumi, one of the servants.

"Merelu-san? Breakfast is ready. O-sama wants me to inform you that 'we have a royal guest, and you are supposed to be on best behavior.'"

Merelu gave Megumi a raspberry.

Megumi blushed and said, "May I be excused?"

Merelu nodded and said, "Megumi-chan, you need not be so formal. We did grow up together."

Megumi replied, "But Merelu-san, it is my duty." And with that, Megumi bowed politely and hurried down the hallway as fast as her little legs could carry her.

-8-

Hitomi beamed as Megumi set another plate of pancakes in front of her. "Domo." she said in a polite, cheery voice.

Van was so pleased that Hitomi was enjoying herself. "Is Merelu coming down, Megumi?"

Megumi bowed, "Hai, Van-sama." She bowed again. "Hitomi-san, would you like another glass of orange juice?"

"Hai, domo." Hitomi replied

Van still couldn't get over how great Hitomi looked. She had only grown about 8cm, but she had blossomed in the past two years. Even if she had been ugly, Van still would be so ecstatic that she was finally back. "So, Hitomi, you know that you're famous now, right?"

Hitomi almost choked. "What?"

Van realized that he had neglected to tell Hitomi about her celebrity status. "Why, of course, you did save Gaea, you know." Van finally spit out.

"Oh, wow! Megumi-san? Did you know who I was?"

Megumi blushed again. "Certainly, Hitomi-san. Everyone does. Although, Van-sama talks about you all the time."

Hitomi didn't know what to say. But she didn't have to say anything, because right then Merelu entered the room, and then, after seeing Hitomi smiling back at her, ran away as fast as she could towards the gates of the palace, in tears.

-9-

"Why?" Merelu cried into his shoulder. "Why did I have to be so stupid? So confident? So, so…" She burst into sobs.

"There, there." Said a man's soothing voice.

"Oh, I can always talk to you, Hiroki."

Hiroki stroked her soft, pink hair. "Just tell me what happened, Merelu. It'll be okay."

Merelu spilled her guts about the whole story.

"Well, it seems to me that Van-sama loves you very much, and Hitomi-san loves you, too. I don't think that either one of them would ever try to hurt you."

Merelu looked into Hiroki's strong eyes. She felt safe with him. He looked so sincere. Then she remembered Van. "I hate men." she said as she turned from him, crossed her arms, and pouted. "How could I think about Hiroki, when I should be thinking about Van?" she thought.

Hiroki reached his arms out to Merelu as he walked around her to face her. He looked directly into her eyes and took her into a loving kiss. She did not think about Van at all.

-10-

"Van, what should we do? She could be anywhere."

Van looked at Hitomi lovingly. He was touched by how much Hitomi was worried about Merelu. He knew that last night was no mistake. They were meant to be together. He remembered how their bodies joined last night. It was the most amazing experience of his life. "Oh, she's at Hiroki's." he said.

"Who is Hiroki?" Hitomi asked.

"Hiroki was one of my brother's old friends. He returned to Fanelia after the Great War to help rebuild it. He's a good man, and one of Merelu's best friends. I worry about her being alone with him, sometimes. He's a bit of a player."

Hitomi had never heard Van mention Hiroki before. She guessed as to why, but couldn't think of a good reason. She was sure Van had his reasons, though. "Shall we go find her, then?" Hitomi asked.

"Yes, I think so. Finish your orange juice and we'll go."

Hitomi gulped down the entire glass of orange juice, then turned to Van. "All done, let's go."

top

-11-

"Oh my!" Hitomi turned bright red. "Sumimasen! I didn't mean to…I'll just go!" Hitomi closed the door again.

Merelu looked at Hiroki with a guilty stare. She felt so bad. Hitomi had never done anything wrong. She had just snapped at Hitomi. Merelu was so selfish.

Hiroki said, "I'm sorry if I messed it all up, Merelu. I just…I…" He stared at the floor.

"Excuse me, Hiroki." Merelu got up to go get Hitomi.

When she got to the door, it opened again, for her to see Van standing there with a look of confusion, surprise, and maybe some anger. He startled Merelu. He patted her on the shoulder, gave her a compassionate look and motioned for her to go after Hitomi. Merelu ran out of the room meekly and closed the door. Van walked over to Hiroki, drew his sword, and said, "If you touch her again, I will kill you!"

Hiroki, although startled, replied calmly, and coldly, "Well you made it clear that you don't want her. At least not the way that I do. I love her. You can't stop that, even if you kill me!" Van was surprised, but he knew that Hiroki was right. He replaced his sword and left the room.

-12-

"So, Van…if you don't mind me asking, how are Millerna-san and Dryden-san?"

Van didn't mind. He was actually surprised how long it took for all their friends to come up. "Well, Dryden hasn't returned yet. But Millerna is healthy. I wish I could say the same for her father and sister. Eries died about a year ago and ever since, her father has been growing continuously more ill." Van was sympathetic to Millerna's loss, because he went through similar circumstances when his father died, is brother was thought dead, and his mother died. His eyes were about to tear, but he discreetly wiped them. "You're probably thinking about Allen. Aren't you?"

Hitomi was silent. Van knew her so well.

"Well, he's still living with…um…his…sister(?), Serena. They live in Quentag, which used to be part of the Zaibach Empire. They are both fine, last I heard."

Hitomi was glad that somebody was happy and well.

"Hitomi?"

Hitomi looked up. Van was next to her now. "Hai"

Van got down on his knee. "Kanzaki Hitomi, will you marry me?" Hitomi was scared. She was amazed. She didn't know what to say. She wished that she could go home and talk to her mother or Yukari about this. And like that, the light appeared and whisked her away. Van ran up to the light with her pendant in his hand. It rose with her as she disappeared into the sky.

-13-

"I can't…I can't be…no!" Hitomi was SO worried. "I can't be pregnant!"

The doctor said, "Hitomi, your test results are back."

Hitomi shot up. "Hai?"

"Well, it looks like you are pregnant."

Hitomi fell to her knees, crying. "How could you? You bastard! I hope you can hear me! You're such a fucking bastard! I hate you! How could you do this to me?!?"

top

-14-

"Sh…the boy's asleep."

"Hitomi nodded as she came in the door. "Domo, Yuki. I really appreciate you baby-sitting on such short notice. I don't think that a funeral is any place for a five-year-old."

Yuki, the baby-sitter felt sorry for Hitomi. "I agree. Are you okay? It was your mom, right? Do you want me to spend the night, Kanzaki-san?"

Hitomi was touched. "That's okay, Yuki, thanks. I didn't talk to my mom much since I told her I was pregnant, at 17. She was so upset that she threw me out of the house. I'll be okay. How much do I owe you?"

Yuki shook her head no. "No charge tonight, Kanzaki -san. Go-kigen yo!"

Hitomi closed the door after Yuki. She felt bad about lying. She wasn't okay. She wouldn't be fine. She needed somebody, just, not Yuki. She walked over to her drawer, took out the pendant, and put it around her neck. "I need you now, Van." she said. Then she thought, "No, not now, some other time. I'll go to sleep now."

-15-

"Kanzaki-san, you're late!" screamed Yatamotu san. He was tapping his foot and looking at his watch as Hitomi ran towards the boardroom.

Hitomi stopped. "Sumimasen, Yatamotu-san, death in the family!" she huffed. She hated her job. She sometimes thought about what would have happened if she hadn't gotten pregnant, and been kicked out of her house, and had to fend for herself. Maybe she'd be a track star. "You don't quite run as well after you've had a child," she thought. "Six meters!" she always applauded herself. She could win the Nationals with a jump like that again. Oh, well.

"Oh, Kanzaki-san, I had no idea. If you need, you can take the day off, you don't look like you got a wink of sleep last night. I'll cover the meeting for you." Yatamotu replied.

"Wow! Really? Oh, Yatamotu-san, I really owe you one. My mom died. Thank you so much!" Hitomi turned and ran in the opposite direction. She was so lucky!

-16-

Van was sitting at his desk, reading a book, when there was a knock at his door. "Who is it?" No answer. He went to the door to see who it was, but no one was there. He shrugged and sat back down to continue reading, and there was another knock at the door. He got up to get it, but the knock continued. He opened the door, but no one was there. Finally, in exasperation, he sat back down. "It's all in my head." The door knocked. It continued knocking louder. Van paid it no mind.

"Master Van? I know you're in there!" Merelu yelled from outside the door.

Van jumped. He ran to the door to find an impatient Merelu on the other side.

"Sumimasen!" Van bowed, partly to hide the fact that he was blushing.

"Well, Master Van," she started. "I am supposed to tell you that 'before you go to dinner, the elders wish to speak with you.' They want an heir or something…"

-17-

Hitomi brushed his gentle black hair behind his ears, and patted a kiss on his forehead, hoping that he wouldn't wake up. Unfortunately for her, Shiro opened his eyes very slowly.

"Ya, Oka-san!" he said cheerfully. "I had a good dream!" Hitomi beamed back at Shiro.

"What was it about, honey?" she asked.

"I dreamt I was with my father and you…" As Shiro continued on about his dream, Hitomi froze in fear. She had never told anyone, not even Shiro. "Oka-san?" Hitomi came out of her trance.

"Hai?"

"Oka-san? Do…do…do I have a father?" he asked.

"Um, Shiro, yes. You do have a father. Everyone does."

Shiro smiled. "Tell me about him!"

Hitomi couldn't help but smile back. "Well, he's strong and wise and very handsome. He's a great fighter. And you know what? He's got big white wings!"

Shiro was delighted. He always heard people talk about their fathers, now he could. "Is Oto-san still alive, Oka-san?" he asked.

"He is alive, but I'm not sure if you can see him. He lives very far away." Hitomi answered.

Shiro frowned at the floor, then up at his mother. "Please, Oka-san!" Shiro placed his hands on his mother's pendant, and then a column of light surrounded the two of them and whisked them away.

-18-

"Thank you for your input, but I do not plan on purposely trying to produce an heir at my young age!" Van roared at the assembled meeting. He stormed out of the room. "Oh, Hitomi, where are you? How long has it been? The Mystic Moon has rotated five times! I need to see you again, I need you here!" He went to his sanctuary where Escaflowne lie dormant. He put his hand on the power source crystal, powerless now, because it contained no Draco-energist. "Hitomi!" he let out a painful scream as the column of light came down from the heavens. He looked up at the sky and whispered, "Domo arigatu gozaimasu!"

top

-19-

Van ran over to the sight where the column had been. Knowing that Hitomi was back made him happier than he'd ever been. "Hitomi!" he cried out as he rounded the bend. He came around to find two bodies lying there on the ground. He jotted over to where they were and sat Hitomi up, hitting her on the face to wake her.

Hitomi's eyes opened slightly. She saw Van's face and she smiled. He smiled back. Suddenly she looked very worried and crawled out of Van's arms as quickly as she could and ran over to where the other body lay.

"Shiro! Shiro, honey, wake up! Wake up!" Hitomi was scared. She shook the body a little. "Shiro!" she screamed. With that, the small boy stretched and yawned, and as he did so, two small, white things peeked from his shoulder blades. But when he finished stretching, they resided. Hitomi was so relieved. "Shiro, honey, get up." Shiro got up and looked very confused.

"Where am I?"

Van was startled by the whole turn of events. "Who is this boy?" he thought.

Hitomi didn't answer her son's question. She didn't even hear it. Her eyes were fixed on Van. "22…he's so…so…handsome."

Shiro tugged his mother's dress. "Oka-san?"

Hitomi looked down. "Hai?"

Van gasped. "Could this boy be her child? But how? Hitomi could never love anyone but me. How could she have a son with another man?" he thought.

Hitomi looked back at Van. "Shiro, honey, this is your father."

top

-20-

"Me, a father? How? I…I…" Hitomi could only smile.

"Oka-san, how did we get here? Where are we? Is this really Oto-san?" Shiro asked. Hitomi wasn't going to answer those questions just yet. There were too many to answer now.

"I…I…He can't be! No…I…don't believe it!" Van snapped finally.

Hitomi expected this to happen. She bent down and whispered something to Shiro. Shiro nodded, and took off his shirt. Van was confused as to what was happening. Slowly Shiro seemed to be concentrating harder and harder. Van didn't notice at first, but two white protrusions were creeping out of Shiro's shoulders. They got bigger and bigger until it was quite obvious that they were wings. Van gasped. "He…he…is my son." Van whispered into the wind. Hitomi gave Shiro a small kiss on the cheek, then walked over to Van and kissed him slowly and passionately. Van was lost in her kiss.

top

-21-

"Okay, he's finally asleep," she said as she shut Shiro's door slowly. Van smiled. Hitomi had never looked so beautiful. Even after having a child, Hitomi somehow managed to keep her figure. He took Hitomi in his arms again, and then walked her to his room.

"Hitomi," he got down on his knee. "Hitomi, will you marry me?"

This time, Hitomi had thought through the consequences. She smiled at Van. "Why, of course," she replied. Van was overjoyed. He didn't know what to say, so he took her, in all his passion.
